About the Proud Army Leader
Once upon a time, there was a king named Alexander in Macedonia. He loved power and was envious. Feeling dissatisfied with his own province, he went to war with the neighboring peoples. There was a battle, and blood flowed like water; many people were killed, and much blood was shed in vain. Alexander defeated the kings around him and added their people to his kingdom. Yet, he was not satisfied and went to war with more distant lands. He conquered various territories. His fame spread throughout the world. Everyone feared him; they would call him the king of kings, the emperor of emperors. Alexander's heart swelled with pride. The territories he had conquered seemed too few, and he thought about conquering the entire world. "I will conquer the whole world and rule over all the peoples on the earth," he thought. Gathering an immense army, Alexander set off toward distant lands unknown to man. One day, he marched with his troops through a vast desert without water. There were no people around, just a desolate wilderness. This long journey exhausted even the unconquerable Alexander. He was extremely thirsty, and when he wanted to drink, there was no water; the supply he had brought with him had run out. Not knowing what to do, he became very distressed. In his anger, Alexander even thought about killing his servant, but at that moment, a sparkling spring appeared before him. Overjoyed, he rushed to it and found a clear, thin stream flowing. Alexander lay down and drank from the spring, quenching his thirst. The water was very tasty and refreshing to him. After that, he had some fish he had brought along washed in the water and began to eat. The fish was very delicious, and it smelled pleasant from the water; Alexander was amazed and astonished. "Undoubtedly, such a marvelous spring flows from a blessed place," he exclaimed, "let's go and conquer it now!" Alexander stood up and walked upstream toward the spring. As he walked, he finally saw a gate that looked like the entrance to paradise. When he approached, he found it closed. He tried to open it but realized it was tightly shut and could not open it. The king knocked on the gate and shouted, "Open!" A voice from within paradise replied: "You cannot enter here; this door leads to the abode of God." "If this is God's abode, I am the king of the earth," Alexander replied impatiently, "I am Alexander, who has never been defeated; why won't you open it for me?" he shouted. "No," replied the guardian of paradise. "We do not know such a person who claims to have conquered everything. We know those who have conquered their own desires due to their faults. This place is only for the righteous Sufis," he said. No matter how much Alexander tried to enter this unknown place, pleading and threatening, it was of no use. The gate remained closed as before. Seeing that he could do nothing, Alexander stood there and asked the guardian of paradise: "Do you know that I am a great one who has conquered the world, watching over all the people?" he said, "Everyone bows before me; they all know me as the king of kings, the emperor of emperors," he said. "If you do not wish to let me into your abode, at least give me something as a sign of my arrival here," he said, "so that all the people may know that I have been to a place where no one else has set foot." The guardian of paradise replied: "Take it if you want, foolish one," he said, "here is something useful for you; it will relieve the sorrow of your soul," he said. "If you look at this thing once, it will teach you wisdom that you have not heard from your former teachers," he said, "now go on your way." Alexander eagerly took this gift and returned to his army. He was astonished to see that the gift was a fragment of a human bone. "What kind of gift is this for one who conquers kings?" Alexander shouted in anger. "Is such a gift fitting for the hardships I have endured?" he said. He angrily threw away the insignificant fragment of bone. Among the army, there was a wise man. He said: "Great king, do not despise this gift. Although this fragment of bone may seem small, it has a marvelous secret. You will see this now, but order it to be weighed with gold or silver," he said. Listening to the wise man's words, Alexander ordered as he said. They brought a scale, placed the fragment of bone on one side, and a piece of gold on the other. The king saw and was amazed. The gold was lighter than the fragment of bone. When he added more gold, the bone still weighed more. When he placed silver, the same thing happened, and every time he placed heavier items on one side of the scale, the other side continued to rise. Finally, Alexander could not bear it and placed his battle axe along with the gold. "Now my axe will weigh it down," he thought. Although his axe was heavy, the side of the scale with the bone fragment remained down as before. "Marvelous!" Alexander shouted, "Such a fragment of bone can outweigh such heavy things. Is there any way in this world to weigh down this bone?" he said. The wise man replied: "My king, there is," he said, "the solution is very simple." He took a handful of dirt and placed it on top of the bone fragment, and the side of the scale with the bone rose while the side with the gold went down. Alexander was even more astonished than before. The wise man said: "Great king, this bone is that bone; it is the bone that holds the eye of a person while they are alive," he said. "The human eye is not large. Yet, the jealousy of this person and the insatiable desire to rule over everything knows no bounds," he said. "As they see many interesting things around them, they keep wishing to have it all. When death comes, and the earth covers them, their insatiable greed and love for countless honors will cease, and ultimately, it will all come to an end. In the other world, there is no respect for wealth or fame," he said. Alexander stood in thought, and the wise man's words shamed him. He realized that all his conquests could not satisfy him in life, and after death, he would need nothing. After that, he commanded his soldiers to "return."
