Baydibek Bi
In the Year of the Rabbit, the winter is harsh, and livestock begins to perish. Shintas the rich man is at a loss about what to do. At this time, Bäydebäk has turned fifteen. He spends his days and nights among the horses. Shintas goes to his horse herders. He inspects his horses. The herds of horses are grazing on the black wormwood, trampling through the thick snow at the foot of the Karatau Mountains. He sees that the older horses are losing weight, and the condition of his horses has deteriorated. - There are still three months of winter ahead. What will happen? Will we be left with nothing, having lost our numerous horses? Come on, what advice do you have? - he addresses his herders. The old herder says: - Drive your horses to the markets in Tashkent and Turkestan. Put the money in your pocket. Next year, you can buy horses again and replenish your stock. A middle-aged herder named Älseït says: - Divide your horses among each household, five or ten each. They will take care of them like their own livestock and will help them survive, - he suggests. - If you entrust them to me, - says the young herder Bäydebäk, - I would winter your horses entirely in Moyynqum. The last time I searched for the forty lost mares, I thoroughly explored the Moyynqum pastures. The herders, camel herders, and sheep herders who were wintering their livestock there said: "Even if livestock perish elsewhere, they do not perish here in Moyynqum. There is no strong wind. The snow falls lightly. The wormwood, izen, shettig, juniper, and saxaul of Moyynqum can sustain as many animals as they graze." Shintas the rich man agrees with Bäydebäk's words and says: - Bäydebäk, my son, I trust you. I know you are not ordinary; how can I forget how many times you have saved my horses from raiders and blizzards? Well, the choice is yours; I give you the freedom, - he says. Thus, Shintas the rich man divides his one thousand five hundred horses into three groups, and about ten young men drive them towards the Moyynqum pastures. They graze in the most fertile and lush areas of the sands. A few days later, Arystan Bi, who governs that region, sends one of his young men to them. - Go and find out whose horses are densely packed like a black cloud? The young man meets Shintas's herders, and Bäydebäk says: - I will go and greet the Bi. I will explain our situation, - he says. Arystan Bi's winter residence is located by the Red Arıq on the sunny side of the Karatau Mountains. Bäydebäk goes to Arystan Bi's house in the evening. He greets the elderly Bi, who has reached eighty, sitting in the main room. - Which village are you from? - I am the son of Üysin Karasha Bi. - Ah, ah, what a blessing. You are indeed our relative through Karasha Bi. I know your father. In our youth, I often went to him and tasted many dishes from his hands, listened to his wisdom and advice. And whose horses are these, my son? - They belong to Shintas the rich man. I am the herder of that rich man. This year, winter is harsh in our land, and it seems there will be a disaster. So we came to seek refuge in Moyynqum and winter here. - Ah, my dear, we are children of the same father. The bounty of the land is the bounty of the people, and the bounty of the people is the bounty of the brave. It is said that the land and livestock are interconnected. I will not say otherwise. The land is not mine; it belongs to God. God's land is enough for all of us. Graze freely and winter here. This village is yours; you can come and go as you please. Arystan Ata's words cheered Bäydebäk's heart. Earlier, while on the road, he had thought, "What if the Bi receives us well, or if he tells us to return?" All his doubts were washed away. The table was set. A large dish of steaming meat was brought in. Everyone reached for the food. During the meal and later over tea, the stories of the Bi Ata seemed endless. They took turns sharing tales. Bäydebäk, who had been fond of stories, poetry, and clever sayings since childhood, listened intently to Arystan Ata. He was so captivated that he was completely absorbed in the conversation. When the villagers were about to sleep, the Bi's wife, wearing a white headscarf, told her daughter, who was pouring tea: - Set up a bed for the guest boy in the main room, and you sleep next to me! Rub my aching back, - she said. Bäydebäk, lost in the conversation, had not noticed the Bi's daughter since he arrived. Now, when he looked closely, he saw that her eyes sparkled like stars, and she was a beautiful girl with a delicate nose and a fair complexion. The girl glanced at him, her eyes sparkling, smiled, and got up to fulfill her mother's request. Bäydebäk thought to himself, "Why didn't I pay attention to this girl since I arrived?" Thus, winter gradually passes. Bäydebäk continues to care for the rich man's horses with his herder brothers, grazing in Moyynqum. His heart ignites with love for the fair girl with sparkling eyes. Now, pretending to search for grazing horses, he often visits Arystan Bi's village, sometimes chasing a fleeing wolf or fox. He enjoys the delicious stories and legends told by the Bi, and finds opportunities to converse with the fair girl. Her name was Güljamal. Her parents, brothers, and sisters affectionately called her "Sary Qyz" (Yellow Girl). Both Bäydebäk's mother and father sensed that he was fond of the yellow girl, but they did not interfere. Instead, they encouraged him to meet more often and grow closer. Especially his sisters-in-law acted as matchmakers. One day, Arystan Bi said: - My son, I have taken a liking to you. Do you have any relatives to propose to in your land? - I have no such caring father or mother; you can speak directly to me. - Then let me arrange a marriage for you and Sary Qyz. How about you stay here? - Elder, the idea of marriage is good, but I cannot stay here. Although I am an orphan, I have my own people and community. I will go back, consult with my relatives, and return shortly. - Alright, that makes sense. This was the initial agreement between Arystan Bi and Bäydebäk. As March approaches, the winter chill begins to fade. The herders start driving their horses back to their homeland. Within a few days, they reach their destination. Shintas the rich man is overjoyed that his horses have returned safely without losing a single one. The herders recount how they wintered in Moyynqum, the paternal care shown by Arystan Bi, and how he even intended to give his only daughter to Bäydebäk. At that moment, Shintas the rich man feels genuine affection for Bäydebäk: - Bäydebäk, my son, I understand now; it is all thanks to you. Finding a comfortable pasture and ensuring my horses survived this harsh winter is all your wisdom. You were a servant at my door, and now you have become my wise son. I will send you with an elder and ten young men, and I will give you a hundred horses; go to Arystan Bi and bring back your bride! Thus, Bäydebäk goes to Arystan Bi's land. The Bi gathers everyone, and they celebrate the wedding of Sary Qyz. There are poetry contests, horse races, girl-chasing games, wrestling, and archery; all customs and traditions are observed. In this way, Sary Qyz comes to the house as a bride with her dowry and gifts. Shintas the rich man also spares no effort to hold a grand celebration. The ceremonial songs and blessings are sung. Horse races and goat fights are held. The people set up a white yurt for Bäydebäk and Güljamal and give them their share. Thanks to his intelligence and resourcefulness, Bäydebäk rises from servitude and poverty to join the ranks of the people. Soon, the community elects him as their Bi.
