Historical Legend about Korkyt Ata
Korkyt, refusing to submit to death, tries to escape from it and wanders the world. Wherever he goes, he encounters graves being dug. Finally realizing he cannot escape death, Korkyt lays a carpet on the flowing waters of the Syr Darya, takes his sister beside him, and while sitting on that carpet, he plays mournful melodies, bidding farewell to his people, land, sister, and his life.
The people living along the river, hearing the sorrowful sound of the kobyz, cannot bear it and gather in groups on both banks of the river, listening intently. The nomadic tribes sitting in the southern part away from the river also hear the sound of the kobyz in the evening, and their forty girls, curious to see what is happening, run but cannot reach it; thirty-nine girls exhaust themselves and die on the way. Among them, only one lame girl, who walks slowly, reaches the banks of the Syr and sees Korkyt before she dies. The grave of that lame girl is marked by a tower built on the top of a mountain, exactly one kilometer away from where Korkyt is laid to rest. Even now, everyone calls it "The Sign of the Lame Girl."
The carpet on which Korkyt sat while playing the kobyz is ready in front of the dug grave where the current of the Syr has pushed it to a bend. Azrael, the angel of death, arrives as well. At that moment, Korkyt mysteriously multiplies himself, appearing as forty Korkyts. Unable to distinguish which one is the real Korkyt, the "soul taker" becomes confused, and at that moment, the Divine Command is given: "Whichever of the forty blinks first, take that one's soul!" When the Korkyt with a soul blinks, his soul is taken. Korkyt is then laid in the grave prepared there. Thus, the majority of people who know this story continue to honor and respect that place of Korkyt to this day.
