Al-Farabi
Al-Farabi goes to Baghdad, to the city of Sham – Damascus. The governor of this city at that time, Sayf al-Dawla ibn Hamdan, is a wise and eloquent man, well-known among the people. Hamdan, along with his close associates, discusses Al-Farabi and wishes to meet him. One day, Hamdan invites all the scholars and learned men of the city and holds a grand assembly. He also summons Al-Farabi to the assembly. Al-Farabi arrives and greets the crowd. Hamdan, seated on the high throne, gestures to Al-Farabi to "take a seat," but does not indicate a specific place. Hamdan's intention here is to test Al-Farabi's status.
– Should I sit according to your status? – he asks. Then the governor tells Al-Farabi:
– Sit according to your own status. – Al-Farabi then walks past the people sitting in the assembly and goes to sit next to Sayf al-Dawla on the throne. The governor nearly slips from his seat. Angered by this, Sayf al-Dawla instructs his servants, in the secret language he has taught them:
– This man who has come is rude; he has displaced me from my seat. Now I will ask him several questions, and if he cannot answer my questions correctly, drag him away from me and roll him out! – he commands. Understanding the governor's secret words well, Al-Farabi responds in that language:
– Oh, Sayf al-Dawla, when I first asked you whether I should sit in the place you indicated or in a place I liked, you permitted me by saying: "Sit in the place you like." So, this is the place I liked; do not take offense, – he replied to the ruler. Yes, Al-Farabi spoke this response in the secret language that the ruler thought no one would understand. Sayf al-Dawla, astonished by Al-Farabi's proficiency in the secret language, bowed to him and respected him. All the scholars and wise men sitting in the assembly remained silent and listened attentively to Al-Farabi's words, all yielding to his lofty knowledge.
