Melody of Longing
While living in the city of Shama, Abu Nasr al-Farabi tended to the king's garden on one hand, and on the other hand, he engaged in writing poetry during his free time.
By the pool in the garden, resting on a Baghdad carpet and leaning on a bird pillow, he sits deep in thought. Nightingales perched on the branches of the fruit trees sing melodiously. As he strokes his thick white beard that falls on his chest, he writes down the following verses:
I have not left, my homeland, in search of fame, fortune, or a throne,
I have come out, my people, in search of the light of knowledge.
I have praised your pure milk as long as I could,
Even though I am over eighty, I am still your infant, your child.
My face is broken, I have fallen into a state of sorrow today,
I cannot lift the veil of longing for you.
Oh my dear Kipchak, my homeland, I miss you,
Wherever I go, I have worshipped your name and honor. These lines reflect the longing of the scholar and poet for his homeland in the twilight of his life, beyond the age of eighty.
