Khoja Akhmet and Arystan Bab (Version I)
Before leaving this world, the Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him] gathered his close relatives, dear friends, and companions, saying:
– I am about to bid farewell to this world and to you. I have a trust to pass on to one of my descendants. Who will deliver it to him? – he says, looking around. The people are astonished. Most are in good health; how could he leave us and depart for the afterlife? What is this trust? Their thoughts race in different directions. At that moment, Arystan Bab stands up, placing his hands on his chest:
– I am ready for this, – he says. The Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him], the friend of Allah and the last prophet, replies:
– Alright, let me consult, – and then he disappears. After a while, he returns. It seems he has brought Allah's consent.
– In the future, a boy named Ahmed will be born. You will deliver this date fruit to him, – he says, handing over a single date fruit he took from his pocket.
Taking the trust meant for the boy named Ahmed and placing it in his cheek, Arystan Bab asks the Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him]:
– Where should I search for that boy, how will I find him, how will I recognize him? – he inquires. Then Muhammad [peace be upon him] replies:
– Do not bother searching; my trust will ask for it from you himself, – he says. Oh, how amazing! What the Prophet said came true; while walking in the field, he encounters an eleven-year-old boy.
– Elder, give me my trust, – says the boy. Arystan Bab does not ask for his name; he simply says to him, “Open your mouth!” When the boy opens his mouth, the date fruit from Arystan Bab's cheek swiftly enters Ahmed's mouth. The boy turns and walks away without saying a word.
– What kind of ungratefulness is this? Where is your gratitude to me? – Arystan Bab shouts. The boy then turns back and says:
– Why should I thank you? You have sucked all the juice and left me with just the pit, – he replies, – Alright, let him come to you and spend the night; let him ask for a wish from me! – and walks away.
