Shepherd Father
One of the many students who studied under the great scholar Khoja Akhmet in the city of Turkistan was Shopan Ata. One day, his teacher gathered the students near the madrasa with the intention of testing them. He spun the staff in his hand several times above his head and then threw it away. He then said:
– Well, my students, whoever finds and brings back the staff first, – and the students rushed off, holding the end of the staff that had flown away. Only Shopan remained still, not moving from his place. When Khoja Akhmet asked:
– Why aren’t you looking for the staff? – he replied:
– Dear teacher, to find your staff, I need to embark on a long journey. – Pleased with his student’s wisdom, Khoja Akhmet wished him a safe journey and gave him his blessing as they parted ways.
Shopan Ata found the staff that Khoja Akhmet had thrown in Turkistan in the Mangystau Peninsula. He dug the place where the staff had landed and built an underground mosque. He dug a well and planted a mulberry tree for the passing travelers. He educated the children of the village and became a renowned teacher himself. His underground mosque, partially collapsed, has been preserved to this day, and the people visit it as a sacred place to pay their respects and spend the night.
