Legend of Genghis Khan (Version III)
Once upon a time, there was a king who had only one daughter. He had no other sons. This girl, who was seen as a son, became pregnant one day. Upon learning this, the king decided to kill his daughter. The girl's mother, filled with maternal compassion, wept and begged him not to kill her daughter. Unable to refuse his wife's pleas, the king eventually agreed to place the girl alive in a chest and send her down the river. After the king agreed to this, there was a skilled hunter named Dombayul who often roamed the fields hunting and occasionally visited the city. The king summoned this brave hunter and spoke to him privately: – My only daughter has committed a crime, and her father has sentenced her to death. After I pleaded, he decided to place her alive in a chest and send her down the river. Therefore, what I want to tell you is that perhaps God has written this for you, so take this girl! Until this matter goes unnoticed, stay in a place where no one can see you, and do not kill the newborn. If the boy survives, he will be worthy of ruling not just you, but the people as well. Once you settle somewhere, come and visit me to take what you need! – he said. Dombayul agreed and, lurking along the lower reaches of the river, took the girl from the chest as it floated by and went to a remote mountain where no one could reach, built a shelter, and settled there. One day, the girl gave birth to a boy. It is said that he was born on a cliff where only eagles could nest, so they named him "Shyngys," meaning the bird of the peak, or "Shyngyzkuz," meaning born on the cliff. After Dombayul, two sons named Tarbagatay and Bedenetai were born. For reasons unknown, over time, Tarbagatay became known as "Targaltai," and Bedenetai as "Burkeltai." Years passed, and when the king grew old and fell seriously ill, facing death and having no son, he pondered whom to leave in his place and first consulted with his wife. Then his wife said: – If your ministers do not oppose, leave me in your place – she said. What the woman thought was: "Although the king and the people may not accept the boy from the mountain, he is indeed worthy of being a king. Therefore, I will remain in power until he becomes a prominent young man in the eyes of the people, and when he is favored by the people, I will hand over the kingship to him." The king gathered his ministers and proposed leaving his wife in his place. Since the ministers did not oppose, he put it in writing to appoint her as his successor on the day of his death. Soon after, the king died, and his wife became the queen. Shyngys grew up to be a mischievous and talented boy. He learned and specialized from a young age. Initially, he hunted alongside his father, but after some time, he began to hunt alone in a different place. When he returned from hunting, he would announce, "Hey, Shyngys Khan is coming, hold the horses!" He would stay in his dwelling for a while and, when it was time to eat, he would divide his food into three or four portions, saying, "This is Shyngys Khan's plate, this is for the ministers, this is for the attendants," and he would eat everything himself. After becoming queen, she summoned Dombayul to the city, provided him with a good residence, and offered him much assistance, integrating him into the ranks of the elite. When Shyngys came to the city and mingled with the people, he began to stand out in various tasks and became a prominent young man. Especially, as a brave warrior, he fought fiercely in battles, defeating opposing kings and chasing down enemies, becoming a fearsome figure. Indeed, in those times, such a brave young man was greatly needed and respected by the people. Noticing that the people's affection had turned to Shyngys, one day the queen said to the people: "If I were to appoint one of my children..." The people did not oppose this. "However, the one we favor is Shyngys," they said. When the queen spoke privately with her three children, Bedenetai and Tarbagatay said: – The path to kingship is ours; even though you are Shyngys's mother, his father's identity is unknown – one of them wished to become king. But Shyngys said: – I will not ask for or compete for the kingship. I will serve the people. If I desire the kingship, my day will come – he replied. Then their mother said to all three: – My dears, it is difficult to govern the people as a king. The bird of happiness does not land where it is asked, but where it is desired. Since I am equally devoted to all three of you, I will think of fairness as far as my wisdom allows. I will say one word based on your talents. Stand by that. All three of you go outside and shoot your arrows at the mirage. Whoever's arrow hits the mirage shall be king! – she said. With these words, they all went outside, and when they shot their arrows at the mirage, Shyngys's arrow hit, and he became Shyngys Khan. From that point on, Shyngys's reign continued uninterrupted until his death. From then on, the people began to call Shyngys's descendants "tore," while Bedenetai and Tarbagatay's descendants were referred to as "bad, half-tore."
