Legend of Asan Qaygy (Version I)
Once upon a time, a king, having no children until old age, took nine wives for the sake of having a child. Eventually, from the last wife, a son was born, and he was named Asan. While the boy was still not of age, the king fell gravely ill and, nearing death, summoned his ministers and gave them the following command: – It seems my time is near. Therefore, I appoint my son Asan as my successor! He will govern the people until he is grown, and I entrust all of you, especially you, the chief minister, with the responsibility of caring for Asan! – he said. After that, he added: – There is a mare; this year's foal belongs to her. At home, there is a yellow hound; this year's puppy belongs to it. In a certain place, there is a tree; a falcon nests at its top. Take this year's chick, raise it, and when these three grow up, hand them over to Asan! – he said. Thus, the king soon passed away. The ministers, without fail, crowned Asan when he came of age and then handed over the three items mentioned earlier. The foal became a steed, the puppy became a hunting dog, and the chick became a falcon. One day, Asan went hunting with many ministers and chased a deer far away. Even after chasing until evening, he could not catch the deer. The others fell behind, but Asan, riding the steed, did not fall behind and chased until dusk. When darkness fell, the young boy could not lie down in the field and cried out until dawn, and even for several days, he could not stop in the wilderness, lamenting. After several days, when the boy was completely exhausted, he encountered a village. A princess saw him from a house while he was standing on horseback asking for a drink, and recognizing from his appearance that he was not an ordinary person, she sent someone to call him and brought him to her palace. After he rested for two or three days, she asked him about his situation. After Asan explained his circumstances, she said: – My dear, you have been away from your home for a long time; your home is forty days away from here. There is no one in between. It will be difficult for you to find your home without a leader. If you wish, I can give you some advice, – she said. Asan replied: – Alright, – and listened to the girl. The girl said: – This is the land of the Muslim prince. My father is the king of this land. Since I am his only daughter, my father has given me the right to choose my husband. Many princes have come with this news, but I could not agree with any of them. Now, if you wish, I like you. If you agree, let us marry, – she said. Since Asan did not oppose this, the girl immediately informed her father. The father also did not object, and after several days of festivities, he married his daughter to Asan. Once this matter was settled, Asan told his wife that his people were in turmoil and that he intended to return home soon. His wife did not oppose this. After Asan informed the king about this news, he also did not object and sent the couple off with several companions. Thus, they safely returned to his homeland. When the people, who had been in distress over their lost king, saw him return, they held a grand celebration and rejoiced. However, amidst this joy, Asan faced another misfortune. Upon returning home, his wife became mute and lost her hearing. The healers and fortune-tellers could not find a cure. One day, Asan took his wife to the market. While they were wandering around the market, he overheard a conversation between two couples. One woman stood up and said: – In this world, will there ever be four of us who are such close friends and companions? May our friendship last from our children to their children and never be severed, – she said. The other three agreed and laughed heartily. At that moment, Asan's mute wife smiled and laughed. After that, as they continued to wander the market, they came across a person selling boots. The seller, asking a high price, said: – You are asking too much; will these boots last for ten years? If they last for ten years, I will pay what you ask, – he said. The mute woman also smiled at this remark. Asan took his wife home and called his ministers to the council hall, bringing his wife along, and said to her: – Since you came to this house, you have become mute; I thought you might have encountered some kind of ailment. But it seems you are pretending. If your ailment is serious, you laughed at the words of those two women praising their friendship and the words of the boot seller today. If you are truly deaf, how did you hear the words? Tell me your true secret, or I will order your death right now, – he threatened. The ministers also urged: – Speak, – they pleaded. The woman, frightened, began to speak, saying: – I have no ailment; it is clear that I am pretending. Because according to our fairy law, if a fairy's daughter engages with a human willingly, she does not speak for forty days from that day. If she speaks, she will encounter some misfortune. Today marks thirty-nine days since I have not spoken. If I endure until tomorrow, the day after, I would be able to speak myself. You did not consider that. Now we will undoubtedly face some misfortune. But let me tell you why I laughed at those people's words. Those two men and two women praising their friendship are playing with each other. Their friendship is not sincere but rather superficial. Their actions will be exposed, and soon they will kill each other. As for the young man selling boots, he has only ten days left to live. I laughed at him for being deceived by this treacherous world without knowing that, – she said. Thus, the girl revealed that she had a flying horse hidden. She mounted it and flew away, saying, "Farewell, stay safe!" After experiencing this sorrow, Asan pondered and, leaving behind all his wealth, crown, throne, and people, mounted a swift horse and set out to search for his wife. Thus, it is said that Asan's wandering the world was caused by this. And it is from this that Asan earned the name "Sorrow," according to legend.
