The Naming of Qasen Khan as Asan Qaygy (Version III)
One day, Qasenhan said to a man named Guzainur: – Please tell my fortune specifically, – he said. Guzainur told Qasen his fortune and said: – You will be destined to marry the daughter of the king of the water spirits, – he said. Qasen asked: – Where will I meet this girl? – Guzainur replied: – You will find her if you cast your fishing line in the waters of the three rivers: the Volga, the Ural, and the Irtysh. She will be caught on your hook in the water, – after which Qasen spent several years casting his line in these three rivers. Finally, at the end of the long-flowing Irtysh River, a chest got caught on his hook. Qasen hurriedly opened the chest, and from it emerged a girl more beautiful than life itself. Qasen, delighted, thought, “This must be the girl that Guzainur spoke of,” and he took her for himself, captivated by her beauty. The girl had a grace in waiting for her husband that surpassed that of any woman. However, she did not speak. Even if asked, she remained silent. But Qasen could hear her thoughts as if she were a person with ears. Qasen was astonished by her silence. If he thought she had no ears, she understood what was said and acted accordingly. If he said she had a tongue, she did not use it. He thought, “She must be looking down on me.” Eventually, he took her to the market, hoping she would speak after seeing various things. They wandered around the market. When the woman reached a certain place, she shook her head and stopped. Qasen asked: – Why are you upset? – but she remained silent as before. Again, while wandering the market, she suddenly stopped and became upset. Qasen asked, but she did not respond. Once more, while walking through the market, she stopped and became even more upset than before. Qasen took her out to the open field and asked her, but she remained silent. Qasen, angry, said: – You have a tongue, why don’t you speak? – and he beat her with a stick. After the beating, the woman said: – What do you want me to say? According to our law, I do not speak until I give birth. If I speak out of fear, I am not allowed to be with the person who has touched me. I am not upset because I look down on you. Now I have spoken. I can no longer be with you. This is the reason for my silence. I am carrying your child, six months along. You should take this child from the place where you took me at the right time! – and she prepared to leave. Qasen said: – Wait, tell me why you were upset three times when we went to the market earlier, – she replied: – One young man bought an apricot, ate the flesh, and then bit down on the pit. I was upset because he paid only one tinge for it, and I was angry that he ruined his teeth for something worthless. Another man wanted to celebrate by marrying a woman, slaughtered livestock, bought expensive fruits, and in the end, when he wanted to buy salt, he haggled over the price and left without it. I was upset by that man's foolishness. No matter how much food there is, can it taste good without salt? The third young man bought a pair of boots. He asked the seller if the boots would last three years. I was upset because he did not know that his life would end a year later, – she said and then said, “Farewell!” and flew away. After this, Qasenhan wandered all over the Saryarka, hoping to find this girl, constantly worrying and expressing his thoughts. For example: – Without a tail, without a mane, How will the wild ass survive? Without fur on its ears, How will the rabbit survive? Without legs, without hands, How will the snake survive? – After expressing each thought with sorrow, Qasenhan's name faded away, and he became known as "Asan Qaygy."
