About Asan Qaygy (Version II)
Khan Az Zhanibek had the city of Astrakhan built by the Russians. The Russians ask for land in return for building the city. The size of that land is equivalent to a hide of an ox cut into strips. In honor of the construction of this city, Khan Az Zhanibek throws a grand feast and invites Asan Qaygy. Asan Qaygy does not attend the feast. Another time, he announces that he will show his falconry skills and holds another feast. Asan Qaygy does not come to this feast either. Only at the third feast, which is held for a child's circumcision, does Asan Qaygy attend. After greeting Asan Qaygy, Khan Az Zhanibek asks: – Why didn’t you come to the previous feasts? Should I take your head off? – Asan Qaygy replies: – You had the city of Astrakhan built by the Russians. Couldn’t you find a craftsman among the Kazakhs? One day, the Russians will take over your city. I didn’t come to the feast where you showed off your falconry skills because one day, frost will take your head, and your falconry will remain with you. Why should I come to that? Now, the reason I came to this feast is to say congratulations on the Prophet's circumcision, – says Asan Qaygy. After sitting for a while, Khan Zhanibek says to Asan Qaygy: – You are a thin man, – to which Asan Qaygy responds: – Without worries, we drink blood, Without knowledge, we drink the leader's drink. We drink the essence of the singing land, We drink the graves of the dead land. How can I be fat, I turn over ninety times a day, That’s why I have become thin, – says he. After these words, Asan Qaygy goes home and lies down. The Khan continues to rule the kingdom. One day, Asan Qaygy hears that "Zhanibek has died." He wonders, "Who could have killed him?" Then he hears, "It was your servant at the door who killed him." After Zhanibek Khan's death, the city is left without an owner. The Russians and Kazakhs argue over who will possess the city. In the end, the dispute is resolved in favor of the Russians. After this, Asan Qaygy sets out to find a place suitable for the Kazakhs' way of life. First, he goes to the banks of the Shu River. He returns, saying, "It is a noisy place." Then he heads north to the Volga and Ural rivers. He dismisses it, saying, "It is a place with harsh winters." Next, he travels to Khorezm and Bessqala. Looking at a mountain called Aibugir there, he says: "A place that never satisfies the arrival, never empties for the departure, a ditch that you dig, you won’t see the light. One day you will shoot, you will not be able to hold. The land is not thick with reeds, it is a place where honey is made," – and he does not like it either. After this, he arrives in Mangyshlak and evaluates it, saying, "This is not Mangyshlak, it is Myngkystau. It is a place where the thousand-sickness lambs are born, the land is narrow." Thus, wandering through various places, he arrives at a place called Maylykongyr. This place greatly pleases Asan Qaygy. Since then, Maylykongyr has become a settlement for the Kazakhs.
