About Asan Qaygy
Aсан Қайғы's criticisms while traveling across Saryarka on his swift horse.
When he saw the long-flowing Irtysh, he said: "This river's offspring does not sit idly, nor does it cry out of hunger. This is a place where the horns of cows and the ears of sheep are visible. Surely, the offspring will cry out from the sheep!"
When he saw the Shinggis Mountains and the Semey Mountains, he remarked: "The soil here is wild. The grass that grows here is wild, the livestock that feeds on it becomes wild, and those who eat its meat and drink its milk become wild. This is a place where blood does not cease, where murder and brawls are abundant."
Upon seeing the Tundyk River, he said: "The twelve judges of the Tundyk, the sheep bleating in the Tundyk, this is a place where the ears of sheep are sticking out." He hesitated to leave, looking back ten times. From then on, he was called Karat.
When he arrived at a place called Kyzyltau, he noted that the mountains and stones would moan like sheep in the evening. "This is a place where the ram does not remain barren," he said.
When he saw the Bayanaul Mountains, he commented: "This is a place unsuitable for horses to rest. How do people settle here? Anyone who sees it would say, 'May your neck be shown to me.' There is a black salt under it. The salt is heavy. What one could spend a night here would end up staying a week. The salt does not let go."
When he reached Azhy Boy, he looked back and said: "Ah, Bayanaul, your settlement is on the back of this Azhy. Livestock will suffer for a week in spring. They will suffer for a week closer to autumn. That is worth a year. Otherwise, Bayanaul is not a suitable place for settlement."
Upon seeing a hill called Bokeybay, he remarked: "That hill has a forty-fold connection with the Bayanaul Mountains."
When he saw the Terisakkan River, he said: "This is the salt of Saryarka."
When he saw Zhetiqonyr, he remarked: "This is the wool of Saryarka."
Upon seeing the Shu River, he said: "This river has steep banks on both sides, and is filled with nar reeds. It is full of tigers. This is a place where a child's belly does not get full, where a knife does not get drawn, where the male becomes a horse, and the female becomes a stranger."
When he saw Karatau, he said: "There are no birds except for cuckoos, and there is nothing to do but pull up green grass. The horses grow old at five, and the young men grow old at twenty. Here are the seducers of both the wild and the people."
When he saw Shymkent and Sayram, he remarked: "Two heads of patience, there is no prosperity in the market livestock, a nearby market does not make one rich, a nearby grave does not increase one."
When he saw the long-flowing Syr River, he said: "Its head is broad, its feet are narrow, it is only suitable for two villages. This place is filled with poverty."
He concluded: "If one grazes in Karatau and winters by the Syr, it would be a suitable place for settlement."
