Ejen Khan (Version III)
The Khan Qasen, known as Asan Qaygy, was summoned by the Kalmyk Khan Ejen Khan. In winter, he set out on a light sled pulled by a swift horse, accompanied by a young assistant. Asan Qaygy wrapped himself in a coat, loaded his bow and arrows onto the sled, and sat down on them. When a traveler asked for directions, he mentioned that the neighing of Qasen Khan's stallions made Ejen Khan's mares abort. That was why he was being summoned. Upon hearing this, Qasen Khan took the reins of the swift horse himself. As they approached Ejen Khan's camp, his dogs barked and rushed out. The assistant quickly dispatched the dogs with his bow. All the beloved dogs of the village died. A man went to inform Ejen Khan, saying, "The two men in the sled have killed our dogs. Hurry and summon them for punishment." Someone came to announce, "The Khan is summoning you." Qasen Khan arrived at Ejen Khan's place. "What is this? How did you kill all the dogs of the village?" Ejen Khan asked. Asan Qaygy replied, "Hearing the barking of the dogs in this village, our bitches did not give birth. That is why we dispatched them with our bows." Ejen Khan, embarrassed by his own words, brought Qasen Khan into the circle of respect. The Kalmyks surrounded him and asked, "Who is the hero in your land?" "The hero in my land is Abat," he replied. "Who is the lord in your land?" they asked. "The lord in my land is also Abat the hero," he said. "Who is the elder in your land?" they asked. "The elder in my land is also Abat the hero," he answered. "What do you mean, is it all one Abat? Or are there different Abats?" they asked. Asan Qaygy replied, "All are one Abat. The hero, the lord, and the elder are all the same person." "Goodness, what kind of person is this? Could we go see him?" they asked. "Of course, you can go see him," he replied. In the spring, the Kalmyk critics and great heroes set off to see Abat the hero. Abat welcomed the visitors with a cheerful and bright demeanor. The Kalmyks were pleased with Abat and could find no fault in his appearance or physique. The Kalmyks, in a friendly manner, asked Abat, "Where, from whom, and how did you learn heroism?" Abat replied, "I learned heroism from the rabbit." The Kalmyks burst into laughter, their sides aching. Abat challenged the Kalmyks to a contest. While chasing argali, deer, and saiga, they encountered a rabbit. The Kalmyks surrounded the rabbit and stood still. "Now, we must not let the rabbit escape under the horse's feet; whoever lets it escape will face severe punishment," they said. "The rabbit must be caught on the tip of a spear and shown," they added. The rabbit darted in every direction, causing the Kalmyks to lose their composure. The Kalmyks were distressed, thinking they would be humiliated by the rabbit. The rabbit circled around Abat's horse like a butterfly. Abat moved twice as fast as the rabbit and caught it on the tip of his spear, showing it to the Kalmyks. The Kalmyks were amazed and admired Abat. However, they thought it necessary to be cautious of him. The Kalmyks said, "Well done, I commend your agility," realizing that nothing could match his movements. Now they wanted to test Abat's lordship. The Kalmyks challenged Abat to contests every day. They enjoyed the respect freely. They were making sausages from the meat of the white gazelle and saiga. There was laughter and merriment. Today, the Kalmyks decided to leave behind a handsome and brave young man. The reason was to lay that young man beside Abat's wife and test Abat's reaction. Would Abat be jealous of his wife or not? For this, they took a trusted person from the Kazakhs, who would explain the situation as a witness, and that person would inform Abat's wife. The Kalmyks said, "We are going to test Abat. We have seen Abat's heroism and agility. Now we need to see his lordship with our own eyes. We need to lay that handsome and brave young man beside Abat's wife in his bed," they said. The handsome Kalmyk young man was welcomed into Abat's wife's bed just before Abat's return in the evening. That night, upon returning from the contest, Abat saw the man lying beside his wife. The Kalmyk hero had his hand under the woman's neck, embracing her as if he were asleep. Abat calmly took the young man's hand from under his wife's neck and said, "Hey, your strength is about to leave you!" and went outside to attend to his business. Upon hearing this, the Kalmyks could no longer hold back their laughter. They all gathered and went to Asan Qaygy, saying, "Noble elder, if you have a child, let it be born, as you said. Now we will return to our land. Please give us your blessing." The Kalmyks, pleased, presented the elder with a fine horse, golden saddle and bridle, a heavenly cloak, and other valuable gifts. Qasen Khan said, "This is your hero Abat, my children! If you have any requests, let me know." "Noble elder, we have no requests. Our only wish was to see Abat. We have seen him, and now we are satisfied. However, we would like to make one request," they said. Qasen Khan and Abat both said, "Speak, speak, do not hesitate." "Our request is to invite Abat the hero to our land. If possible, let him come with us. Or he can go later with his companions! In our land, there is a bird that lives on a high mountain. We cannot approach that bird because the mountain is very high, and we cannot climb it. However, we can go to the foot of the mountain to hunt and trap birds. We do not know what kind of bird it is. We avoid harming it. But it has taken our falcons, hawks, kestrels, and eagles raised by Barazuly. Its agility is faster than lightning. It swoops down and disappears. It has taken down our strongest birds. Even several of our famous marksmen could not shoot it down, even when surrounding it. This bird has severely troubled us. We must shoot it down. Noble elder, we ask you and Abat for this request," they said. Abat replied, "Alright, I will go in the coolness of autumn," and he promised. The Kalmyks, satisfied, clapped their hands and returned to their land. Three months later, Abat the hero armed himself, donned armor, and set off with ten companions to Ejen Khan's land. The Kalmyks who had come and returned earlier welcomed Abat the hero with admiration and showered him with various gifts. After resting Abat for a week or ten days, they prepared to go to the mountain where the bird was said to be. He selected several strong wrestlers, heroes, and marksmen. They arrived at the mountain with their famous large falcons, eagles, hawks, and kestrels. They went to the foot of the mountain and saw the bird on the high mountain. Abat could not discern what kind of bird it was. However, the marksmen, ready to shoot, spread out in different directions. A shout went up, "Release all the birds, let them fly!" The birds soared into the sky. Abat, who was watching the bird on the peak without blinking, prepared his bow as the bird suddenly swooped down. Abat managed to draw his bow in time. The arrow struck the bird from the lung side and brought it down to the ground. The Kalmyks, looking up at the sky, did not even see Abat draw his bow. They only saw the bird fall to the ground. When they rushed over, they found that the bird was a golden eagle. It bore no resemblance to the eagles they knew. Its feathers were completely different. Its bone structure, lineage, and sharpness of vision were indeed distinct. The Kalmyks' long-desired goal was achieved. The Kalmyks, very pleased with Abat, spared no expense in their gifts. They sent Abat back to his land with ten companions, satisfied. The powerful Ejen Khan, protected by Abat, moved away and relocated far. After Ejen Khan moved, other khanates could not hold their ground either. It is said that shortly after Abat shot down the bird, while watering his horse at the foot of Jaqsyqylsh, he was swallowed by a fish. It is said that Abat, struggling with the fish, managed to bring it to the shore.
