The daughter of Asan Kaiğı, Jupar
Aсан Қайғы rode a swift horse for seven years, looking for land and favoring the place called Jideli Baysyn while sharing his thoughts with the people. His fifteen-year-old daughter, Zhūpar, understood and sensed what he was saying. The man known as Aсан Қайғы rode a swift horse for seven years, searching for a place he liked, which was the land called Jideli Baysyn. "This is the land created by God. No one dies before reaching a hundred years, the sheep give birth to two lambs each year, and the land is fertile," he said, to which the people replied, "How can we reach there?" Aсан responded, "It is easy to get there; if we let the livestock run free for three years without mixing rams with sheep, stallions with horses, or bulls with camels, we will reach there," but the people found this hard to accept and did not move. Zhūpar, who was weaving, understood her father's words. The wealthy Aishora became a matchmaker for Zhūpar and his son Ernazar, and when she turned seventeen, he married her off. Sitting under a veil, Zhūpar said to her husband Ernazar: – You travel among the people, find a girl even more beautiful than me and propose to her! – Her husband did not believe Zhūpar's words. He said to her: – You are the daughter of the sky; can anyone be as beautiful as you? – Finally, convincing her husband with words: – What do you mean? In a land of people, can’t one be found? – After this, her husband traveled and proposed to the daughter of a wealthy man. Zhūpar said: – Now find a wife even more beautiful than this one! – Ernazar replied: – I no longer need a wife, – to which Zhūpar said: – Even if you don’t need one, I do, – and insisted until he took another wife. The three wives respected Zhūpar and lived harmoniously. Each of the three wives bore fifteen sons, totaling forty-five sons. Zhūpar had swords, spears, armor, helmets, bows, and quivers made for her forty-five sons. One day, Zhūpar said to her husband: – My father rode a swift horse for seven years, traveling the land. He said, "I found a place called Jideli Baysyn: the foals are born like calves, the lambs are born, the livestock never run out, and it is a place safe from battles." He said it was far, but he also said, "If we let the livestock run free for three years without mixing rams with sheep, stallions with horses, or bulls with camels, we will reach there." After marrying, I thought to myself: "If God allows, I will go to the Jideli Baysyn my grandfather spoke of," and God granted me that thought, – and she took the livestock and did not send male animals with them. They moved to Jideli Baysyn. They reached a place called "Khan's Reserve" without stopping. They left others behind. At that time, the khan was a man named Akshakhan. He sent someone to say, "Move from the reserve!" When the person arrived, he saw only one man and one woman. The messenger immediately ordered them to move. Zhūpar said: – We are travelers; we dismounted when the horse stumbled, but we will leave soon, – she said. After informing the khan, he lay down. That evening, Zhūpar settled all the tents in the reserve, set up houses, and arranged the two wives on either side, making the lodging even better than before. After they settled in and were satisfied, she gathered her children and said: – My dear children, we have come to a foreign land, to a place we have never seen. A traveler is not many, and a hollow is not more than a lake, – she said. Yesterday, someone came with a single cart and said to move, and now we are moving. After seeing so many sons and livestock, the khan will come with many people and say, "Move!" You will rise early tomorrow and mount your horses. Do not stay at home. Divide into three groups of five, and for the fifteen born to me, wear white horses, white cloaks, and white hats. For the fifteen born to the middle wife, wear black horses, black cloaks, and black hats, and for the fifteen born to the younger wife, ride chestnut horses and wear chestnut cloaks. Do not fall asleep; watch the village. When people come and enter the house, do not be disorganized; come together and greet them politely. Do not mingle on your own; sit separately. "A person's wisdom is in their eyes," she said. Do not act like wild people; be cheerful! – she advised her children, released the livestock into the reserve, and went to sleep. Zhūpar woke up early, got her children up, mounted them on horses, and sent them off. She did not lie down but looked towards the khan's direction, and as the riders increased, the khan's people gathered and came to the village. Zhūpar spread a carpet on the road where the khan was coming and went out to greet him, leading him into the yurt. She hung the weapons of the fifteen on the main wall of the yurt. On either side of the house, she hung the remaining fifteen weapons. The khan entered the yurt and sat down, looking at her. The khan asked: – Who are you, and where are you going? – Zhūpar replied: – We are people who have migrated from Saryarka. My father Aсан Қайғы traveled for seven years, searching for a place without battles, and found this place called Jideli Baysyn. After the people did not agree, he moved with his wife and children. I am his descendant, moving for the sake of the black cauldron and the yellow child, – and after finishing her explanation, she added: – There is an old saying: "If your mind wanders, go to the hammer, If your place changes, go to the khan. If you are hungry, go to the rich, If you are sorrowful, go to the khan." – At this time, we have wandered, changed places, been hungry, and been sorrowful, so instead of being a burden, I thought to go to the khan, who has a place, and seek companionship, and I am staying in your reserve without asking for permission, – she was responding when people entering and exiting the house said: – A group is coming from the east, – and soon after: – A group is coming from the right, – and then: – A group is coming from the left, – they said. The villagers gathered for the newcomers. The arriving young men did not stand outside but immediately came to greet the khan. As they sat according to their groups, the khan said: – Zhūpar, introduce them! – – The first fifteen are from me, the middle fifteen are from my middle sister, and the last fifteen are from my younger sister, – when she said this, the khan asked: – How is it that you are from Aсан and have taken a wife? – Zhūpar replied: – Oh, my lord, there is an old saying: "A bad dog guards the house, A bad wife guards the man. A bad companion guards the chief, A bad khan guards the land." And the ancients said, "If there are many mares, there will be many foals." Can we say that the ancients lied? Is there any difference in a child born from one man? If I had not taken a wife, where would these children have come from? – When the khan could not respond to Zhūpar, he went outside. After a while, the khan thought: – Even if this woman is a woman, she must be someone who believes in herself. Coming to the reserve without question and having forty-five sons – those are warriors, and those weapons and armor are theirs. If you like this reserve, I would like to give it to Zhūpar, – the people said: – What do you mean giving a reserve that has been passed down for seven generations to one woman? – The khan replied: – Oh, people! I do not want to give this reserve for nothing. I am also thinking about the future and seeing danger. Although we are many, we are like sheep; they, though few, are like wolves. Did they not set out from Saryarka with their lives tied in a cloth? And do we have warriors like those forty-five sons, with weapons like those? I think it is better to give it for honor and goodwill than to shed blood and engage in conflict, – after this, the people said: – Everything you say is correct. Think about it yourself, – they said. After the khan entered the house, they prepared the meat of the mare and sheep they had slaughtered for the guests, and they treated the large crowd with respect, serving them all together on one plate. After the people had eaten the meat and drunk the broth and washed their hands, the khan said: – Oh, Zhūpar, this reserve was left to me by my seven ancestors. You have come longing for land from far Saryarka. I have given this reserve to you as a gift. From now on, let it be called "Zhūpar's Reserve"! – Then Zhūpar said to her children: – My dear children, if the khan has given us the reserve passed down from his seven ancestors, there is an old saying: "If the khan does good to the common people, the common people will honor the khan." Present the khan with a prize horse, a black carpet, a black camel, and a foal, and let others present horses and cloaks! – With such customs, knowledge, and responses, Zhūpar pleased the khan greatly: – Lady, you have spread a carpet on our path. How did you know it was our path? – Zhūpar replied: – When I went outside and looked at the large crowd, they all rushed towards the horses. Since you were coming straight without turning, I thought the khan was on this side, – she said. The khan bid farewell and returned to his people. A good wife brings happiness to a man. "Good fortune comes from a good wife" is what this means. Through Zhūpar's wisdom, the khan's reserve became known as "Zhūpar's Reserve" without war.
