Zhirenshe the Wise
One day, while traveling, Jirenche the wise came to a village, and between the village and him was a river. As he was confused about where the crossing was, a girl came with a bucket to fetch water from the other side of the river. Jirenche called out:
– Where is the crossing of this river? – he asked the girl. The girl replied:
– There is a crossing over there – though far, it is close. There is a crossing closer – though close, it is far, – she said. Not understanding what this meant, Jirenche went to the closer crossing, and as he walked, when he reached the middle of the river, his horse stumbled in the mud, getting him all dirty, and he had to turn back. After that, he went to the crossing that was far yet close and easily crossed over, arriving at the girl’s house on the other side. Once there, Jirenche looked at the girl and said:
– My dear, I am hungry after coming from afar. Give me something sweet to eat, – he said. The girl replied:
– There is one dish that is bitter, though bitter it is sweet. There is one dish that is salty, though salty it is bitter, – she said. Then Jirenche said:
– Bring me the dish that is bitter yet sweet. – The girl got up, took a handful of salt, and placed it in a bowl in front of Jirenche. Seeing this, Jirenche said:
– My dear, how can I eat just salt? – Then the girl served him a bowl of plain broth without salt. Jirenche was a wise and clever man. As he thought about it, he understood the hint. And feeling embarrassed to ask for something sweet without waiting for the host’s menu, he realized from the dish she served that the girl was clever, and in the end, he asked her for marriage.
