Er Edige
A hero named Edige emerged from the Kazakh people. He was a hero named Edige, He cared for the people, When an enemy approached the edge of the land: "I will go out!" he would say. He was a hero named Edige, He cared for the people, If someone was a year older than him, "My dear, you know," he would say. He was a hero named Edige, He cared for the people, If someone was a year younger than him, "My child, you wait, I will speak," he would say. "I am Edige, a hero, I am an unbreakable silk thread. To those who do not know, To those who do not heed the words of the knowledgeable – I am the one who can make a club from an oak tree Strike the head of the ignorant," he would say. Once, when he was a child lying in a cradle with a golden head and a silver bottom, someone found him and took him to Toktamys Khan in Turkestan, and Toktamys raised him. During his childhood, he often broke the toys given to him by Toktamys. This story is a great book among the Kazakhs. Nowadays, people have forgotten the old words, and due to the lack of listeners, the storytellers have decreased. Let’s talk about one broken toy. In Toktamys's time, there was a man with seven sons. He died, leaving only one goat and his seven sons. The seven of them divided the living goat among themselves. One took the head. One took the two eyes. Four took the four legs. One took the rest of the body. The part that fell to the youngest was one of the hind legs. That youngest's share was a leg that limped, and when he wrapped it with a cloth after putting a corner and a parrot on it, that cloth, by stepping on someone’s discarded ashes, caught fire from the remaining embers, and then it spread to someone’s field, igniting it. The owner of the field, after arguing with the seven, came to Toktamys. Toktamys Khan blamed the one who wrapped the cloth and ordered that the payment for the field be made solely by him. That poor man, lamenting and crying like a calf, was asked by Edige, who was playing with marbles. After he told the whole story, he called the seven together and said: "The Khan has given a judgment without knowing the situation. The true owner of the goat is not this one: if the head does not lead, if the eyes do not see, if the three healthy legs do not walk, where will the lame leg that is being carried go? He is not to blame for the payment. The owners of the head that leads, the eyes that see, and the three healthy legs that walk – they are the ones to blame," he said. They went back to Toktamys Khan and told him, and the people supported this statement. Despite breaking Toktamys's judgment from many angles, Toktamys Khan, realizing his injustice, fled. Eventually, when he returned to attack Toktamys Khan, Toktamys fled, leaving his only son Nuraly behind: "Do not return without killing him!" he said, sending him after him. When Nuraly entered a thicket barefoot, he injured his foot on the reeds, and following the trail of that blood, he found and killed him. When Nuraly was leaving, he said: "Give me one of Toktamys's daughters!" and entrusted it to his father. When Toktamys's wife heard this, to create discord between the father and son, she adorned the daughter and attracted Edige's interest: "Why not find many girls instead of a child like you?! This is my child, a child suitable for you!" – and she married her daughter to Edige. When Nuraly returned, he was upset that his father had taken the girl he had claimed for himself and left without needing his father. When Toktamys's land was raided, one of Toktamys's maidservants had just given birth to a baby boy. Out of pity for the newborn, she gave him a mare: "Milk it and raise your child," she said. That boy grew up and was named Keykuat, and when he mounted a horse, he was said to be heading towards Edige in search of Toktamys's blood. It was the time when Edige was old. When Keykuat encountered him and intended to fight, Edige said: "I did not know that a foal born of cunning Would become a horse. I did not know that Keykuat, Born of a maid, Would become a stranger. If I had known that a foal born of cunning Would become a horse, If I had known that Keykuat, Born of a maid, Would become a stranger, Would I not have cut off its head in the yoke? Would I not have plucked out its eyes in the swaddle?!" – he said. Then Keykuat replied: "When I was born, you had a kindness in giving me the mare, saying, 'Raise your child.' For that, I will not use my weapon against you. If you are a woman, you will walk with a smile. If you are a man, you will die in your own stride!" – and he walked away. Then Edige said: "Oh, how wonderful! Alas, if I had lost sight of that newborn while it was being soiled, it would not have been a hindrance to me! This word that I let slip was worse than a blow!" – and he died of grief. Nuraly took a wife and had children. When Nuraly's wife was cradling the young child, she placed a thorn under the swaddle. The child cried out until dawn. Then Nuraly asked: "Why does the child keep crying?" and when he was told: "There might be thorns in the swaddle. That is why he is restless and crying," Nuraly said: "Why don’t you clean the swaddle and remove the thorns?" Then his wife replied: "Oh dear, he might be like Edige, and the child might be like Nuraly. What did Nuraly show to Edige? What can this child show you?!" After hearing this from his wife, Nuraly was enlightened, set out, and took revenge on his father from Keykuat. Edige's chosen place was Ulytau, Kishi tau. He had made a will while he was alive: "When I die, take my body to the foot of the Myzhylyk mountain of Karatau, to the west of the Sozak fortress, where my ancestor Babai Tükti Shashti Aziz is, and lay me beside him!" According to that will, the body of the hero Edige was laid there. This was said yesterday by the Barefoot Ashdyr, who also had himself laid to rest there.
