Ediye the Brave
Let me speak of what I heard from Er Edige. The elders used to recite it as "The Words of Er Edige": There was a hero named Edige, He cared for the people, When an enemy approached the land, He would say, "Let me go out!" There was a hero named Edige, He cared for the people, If someone was one year older than him, He would say, "My dear, you know!" There was a hero named Edige, He cared for the people, If someone was one year younger than him, He would say, "My child, wait a moment, let me speak!" "There is a hero named Edige, I am an unbreakable silk thread. To those who do not know, And to those who do not heed the wise: 'I am the one who can make a sound From the oak tree's branch!'" - he would say. In the days when the Kazakhs were not recognized by the name "Three Juz," there was a madman known among the people as "Babai Tükti Shashti Aziz." Near Karatau, at the foot of a mountain called Myzhylky, he had a spring where he would go to pray. One day, early in the morning, as he was going to take ablution, he saw three naked girls bathing and playing, splashing water on each other. The madman, who had never seen naked women before, fainted. One of the three girls also fainted. It turned out that they were the daughters of the king of the fairies. Two of the girls, who were swans, picked up the fainted girl and flew away. After taking her to their land, they gathered their shamans and fortune-tellers and had her fortune told: - "The gaze of a saint who has come from humanity has fallen upon her. If that saint does not write and release her, no one else can!" - they said, and then they sent swift fairies to bring her back: - "No coat of comfort, bare legs, bare feet. There is not a single part of her body that anyone would not find repulsive, she is a disgrace!" - they said, "Since God has brought this work upon us, what can we do?" - "Please write and heal my daughter!" - he pleaded. - "What claim do I have on your daughter? What claim do I have on you? They have bathed in my water, polluting it. And I fainted, missing my morning prayer. I have never missed a prayer in my life, make up for that!" - he replied. - "Then, as a black lamb, take this daughter of mine!" - he said, and he gave his daughter to the madman, leaving them at the spring's edge. - "This woman has no good qualities. What do you think, did that one live a life of wealth and joy? A life of chaos, disorder, and confusion. The madman: - "Show your naked body like before!" - he shouted. Although the fairy girl obeyed other commands, she did not heed this one. There is a saying, "If a man gets angry, it will be bad!" The madman immediately started beating her. After the bitter stick hit her sweet flesh: - "After seeing my naked body, you would have fainted and collapsed. You did not know that. If I had a child with you, the light and radiance within me would go to that child. You should have seen that. You could not endure it, you were hasty. Now I am not for you, and you are not for me. I was pregnant with you. A male child will be born. As soon as he is born, I will wrap him in a cradle and bring him to this spring. With a golden spout and a silver bottom: that will be the sign!" - she said and flew away as a swan. Did the madman keep watch over this? The girl, as promised, brought the cradle and left it behind. Someone who happened to find it took it to Toktamys Khan of the Nogai in Turkistan, and the child grew up as an adopted child in his care. Those who tell this as a tale speak in various ways: "The reins of a fool are in his ears. The reins of a wise person are in his heart. A fool is satisfied with whatever he hears: he freezes like yogurt, settles like milk, and remains still. A wise person, upon hearing something, does not settle for just hearing; he reflects on it and stops at the reasoning of his heart." There is an old saying from the ancients: "A hero is like a stray dog. He finds one of two women. A judge is like a white sharia. He finds only one woman in a thousand!" - they say. This Edige is also made a judge who breaks the throne of Toktamys Khan and gives judgments. "He is made both a man and a hero who cannot be looked in the face. 'Two swords cannot fit in one sheath. Two wishes cannot fit in one heart.' I know Edige as a hero and a warrior. I do not believe in the saying 'He spoke of authority.'" Whoever it may be, Toktamys Khan knew that "There will be no son born from you, and no slave bought from you!" - he intended to destroy him, and it is true that he fled. Then, when he sent Kenjanbay, the son of Kenes, to call him back, the words Er Edige said to Kenjanbay were: - "Kenjanbay, son of Kenes, You have no wisdom... He is not a Khan - he is a... fool, I know who he is! If you return safely, What will you say to him? I will go there, I will go to Satemir Khan. No matter how many companions there are, I will take what I need. Returning to your people, With sweat from your saddle, With blood from your ribs, I will cause chaos. Your beauty like Kunikei, Your lineage like Tinikede, Without a marriage contract, without giving livestock, I will take you as a wife! I will water your land with blood, I will destroy your people, I will wet my sword, And I will dip it in blood like a river!" - he said and continued on his way. On his way, he encountered Karatobin, who had come from the Kalmyks, taking Satemir Khan's daughter with him. He killed Karatobin and took the girl, and after going to Satemir Khan, Satemir Khan gave his daughter to Edige, bringing a multitude of troops and raiding Turkistan, plundering it. Toktamys Khan fled. He had eight sons, and they also fled. Then, after Edige took a wife and had a child, he named his son Nurali, and when Nurali raided Turkistan, he was with him. He told his only son Nurali: - "Do not return until you have cut off Toktamys's head and pierced his eyes!" - he sent him off. Then Nurali firmly instructed his father: - "If you take one of Toktamys's two daughters, give me the other!" - he said. - "Alright, my son, as long as you do not leave Toktamys's eye above ground!" - he replied. Upon hearing this, Toktamys's wife, to create discord between father and son, placed both daughters in Edige's embrace, making them her own. Then Nurali, seeking revenge, searched so fiercely that wherever Toktamys went to hide, he could not find a place to rest. At that time, the Kazakhs also had Amir Temir, who was wise. He could not protect Toktamys either. Toktamys fled across the Irtysh River. He went to hide in a cave. Being barefoot, he cut his feet on the reeds, bleeding, and from the trail of blood, he was found and killed, dragged out of the cave, and buried. Today, that cave is called "Bayan Cave." There is a mound at its head, called "Toktamys's Black Mound." In ancient times, those who found Toktamys's stirrup from that mound said: "The width of the stirrup could fit the head of a horse from this era!" There is a city called "Shot" about one hundred fifty kilometers from Kereku, which is said to be nearby. Nurali returned safely and, upon hearing that his father had taken both of Toktamys's daughters, became estranged without seeing his father. Toktamys's wife fulfilled her plan, ensuring that the father and son would never see each other in their lives. Now, while they were raiding Turkistan, one of Toktamys's maidservants was giving birth to a son. When Er Edige saw this, he said: - "Poor beggar, do not kill your child!" - and he gave her a cunning black mare. The foal born from that mare became a horse, and the son born from the maidservant became a man, and that child's name was Keykuat. It was the time when Edige was aging, and he realized that his only son Nurali had completely lost sight of him, and to take revenge on Edige for Toktamys, Keykuat mounted a horse. When Edige and Keykuat met, Edige spoke: - "Oh, what a pity, alas! I did not know that the foal born from cunning Would become a horse. Keykuat born from the maidservant Would be a stranger. If I had known that the foal born from cunning Would become a horse, If I had known that Keykuat born from the maidservant Would be a stranger, Would I not have cut off his head in the bridle, Would I not have pierced his eyes in the cradle?!" - he said. Then Keykuat replied: - "When I was lying in the cradle, you gave my mother a black mare, saying: 'Do not kill your child!' I thought you were old and did not want to use weapons against you! If you are a woman, you will laugh and walk. If you are a man, you will die from your own horse!" - he said and continued on his way. Now, how long do you think Edige would wander? He died from his own horse! Who mourns Edige's death?! Toktamys's two daughters - young wives, along with their mother, had their wishes fulfilled. Among the people, only Nurali's wife, Edige's daughter-in-law, was left in that state. She could not dare to say anything to her husband. Then this poor daughter-in-law had a child in the cradle. She decided to take her revenge on the child. When she divided the child, she intended to place a thorn in the cradle. The child could not sleep all night, crying and wailing. Nurali asked his wife: - "Why is the child crying so much?" - he asked. The daughter-in-law replied: - "Who knows, maybe a thorn got mixed in the cradle? If he does not cry, he is healthy, there is no illness," she said. - "Why do you not take care of the child, remove the thorn, clean it, and divide it?" - he asked. - "No matter how much the child grows, he will be like Nurali, like his father Edige. What did Nurali show Edige? What will this child show you?!" - she replied. - "Oh, I see, it was my mistake. What seemed strange to me, embracing my wife in my arms, must have seemed strange to everyone!" - he said, and he set off to take revenge on Keykuat. Long ago, Toktamys's eight sons had crossed the Edil River. What could they do? When asked, "Why are you all piled up like the dung of a stallion?" they would say: "If the Edil freezes, who would not cross?! If Edige dies, who would not return?!" - their words became a proverb, remaining in the mouths of the people along the Edil River. The place where Er Edige settled is known as Ulytau and Kishi tau. Before he died, he sat at the top of Ulytau, and upon hearing Keykuat's words, he died of grief. Before he died, he said: - "Do not bury me here! Build a stone wall! If Nurali is alive on earth, like the saying 'a horse will find its tether, a mill will find its spout,' he will find me. Then take me to the foot of Karatau, beside the black mound of the ancestor of the Karakalpaks, Sozak, where my ancestor Babai Tükti Shashti Aziz is, and lay me beside him!" - he said, and they took his body there. The place where he entrusted his remains in Ulytau is called "Akmeshit Auliye." This was spoken yesterday by Jalangayak Azder, the son of Sarysope from the Keraits, who also had himself buried there.
