Shora Batyr
Once upon a time, there lived the forty-house Tamas and the thousand-house Zhasyl Turks. In the thousand-house Zhasyl Turks, there was a khan named Karakhan and a wise man named Alibi. The forty children of the Tamas and the thousand children of the Zhasyl Turks used to play together. When they played, the thousand children would win the forty children's game pieces, bury them alive, cut their noses, and do as they pleased. Among the forty-house Tamas, there was a rich man named Narik, who had no children but had countless livestock, including a unique spotted horse that had never been born from anyone's herd in his time. Alibi, the wise man of the thousand-house Zhasyl Turks, asked for that horse: – If Narik the rich man wants to be my ally, he should give me his spotted horse; otherwise, this is where we will cut our horse tails! – he said. Then Narik the rich man replied: – "What does a childless fool have to ride this?" – he cried out in anger, saying, – Oh God, grant me the wealth of this livestock; if not, take me! – and he went up the hill with his wife, mentioning a bull from a cow, a stallion from a horse, a ram from a sheep, and a goat from a goat. Taking all his livestock except the horses, they went to a place called Syrlytam, where they slaughtered their livestock and offered it to God, cutting the tendons of newborn calves and leaving nothing for the dogs, gathering everything at the top of that place, making a great noise, and for forty days, they rolled around in grief, shedding tears, and both of them cried together. Then a man in a white robe came along, carrying a bag on his back, with the Book of Shara in his bosom and a staff in his hand, saying: – Oh, poor mourners, you have made a noise to God! Your cries have reached God's ears, and He has sent me. Raise your head, stretch out your hands! Do you want to take a thousand or do you want to take one as if it were a thousand?! Speak what you desire! – he said. Jumping up and spreading their hands: – If the fire is made filthy, There will be no way to the hill, What can I do with so many of you, What about your grass?! If you give, give it to me, Give me one as if it were a thousand! – when they said: Well, poor ones, God has heard your tears and granted your wish. – If what you desire is a son, If that is what you think, If shot, let the bullet not pass, If struck, let the sword not pass, Let no command come from anyone Except for Allah! Name him "Shora"! – and he went on his way. The rich man and his wife, with hearts bursting with joy, returned home, realizing the generosity of the Lord God. The old woman became pregnant, and when her time came, after twenty days of labor, she finally gave birth to a son. They slaughtered a mare, gathering the lower people. They slaughtered a swift mare, gathering the upper people. They slaughtered a spotted mare, gathering the regional people. "There is a thirty-day game, a forty-day feast," they say, and they called the people to celebrate. The khan of the thousand-house Zhasyl Turks, Ali Khan, and his wise man Alibi said: – The forty-house Tamas are showing off their wealth and holding a feast. They did not give me the desired spotted horse. Let no one from our Turks attend this feast. May the soup remain unconsumed, and the meat remain uneaten! Let them not know whom to give it to, let them be in despair! – and none of them went to the feast, nor did they take anything even if offered. Shora reached the age of five. He went out to play the game of asyk with the forty children: – Oh, brothers, brothers, let’s go to that group, let’s play the game of asyk, – he said. Then the Tamas children began to protest: – My dear, they are many, and we are few. Let’s not go to them, let’s not fall into trouble. They will bury us alive, strip us like a bird. They play with the asyk as if it were a single ball. They have pierced our hearts, hardened our tongues; if we go, we will die, – they said. – Come, brothers, brothers, Let me go ahead and die, Let me see with my own eyes! If they make a noise in numbers, I will give them a punishment! You go and start the game; I will go to the horses and ride the spotted horse, and I will come back quickly! – and taking the bridle in his hand, he tucked the saddle under his arm and headed for the horses. When he reached the horses, the spotted horse neighed, saying: "Oh my dear, my master has just arrived!" and when it nodded its head and came to him, he took the bridle, put the saddle on it, and rode bareback. When he arrived, the thousand children were doing as they pleased to the forty children, stripping them like birds, and placing the dawn that would not rise and the sun that would not set on their heads. Then Shora said: – Is your land snowy, That the wheelbarrow does not move? As if it has eaten the little, Is your land headless? If what you seek is a fight and a brawl, Come to me! – when he said, the leader of the thousand children was a bald boy. He said: – The red bald with pheasant feathers, The top hair is bald, Shoot down the lone one, Wipe out the lone one, Pull down the lone one, Knock down the lone one! – and he began to shout, seeing both the long and the short. He killed all the thousand children. – Did Allah bring me down, or did a man bring me down? – and the forty children did as they knew to the thousand children. They pulled the pheasant-feathered red bald's mane, took his gun. They turned him into a bloody mess, astonishing those who saw it, and beat him while rolling him like a sheep. – Whatever you see, tell your people, – he said, taking revenge on the forty children from long ago. The pheasant-feathered red bald went before Khan Karakhan and wise man Alibi: – Your Majesty, I have a complaint! – he said. – If you have a complaint, speak! – they said. – The other day, there was a hero named Shora, The sign of his bravery – He was the tallest among this group! The other day, if Shora grows up, If he rides a horse, He will make a feast for your ten houses. He will also load the horse. He defeated a thousand children, He made it look like a place to enter. Do not say he will not do it to us, My lord Karakhan, My lord Alibi, He will do this to you too! – he said. As wise as Alibi was, What he coughed was a cough, What he spat was a spit: – What is there to not wipe out The forty-house Tamas? Let’s go, let’s ride! – he said. Khan Karakhan said: – The forty servants have the strength of forty men, and he alone has the strength of forty heroes. We cannot match him! – he said. – Narik was my friend; Alibi would not let it go. Let him inform his people, whether it be about his livestock or his only son. Let him be frightened, let him flee, let him find his people and land! – and he sent a message. The forty-house Tamas began to panic day and night. They could not wake Shora. When Shora slept, he would sleep for twenty days, and they could not wake him. – What shall we do? – they panicked, and the forty children said: – Leave the forty donkeys and the kumys and go! – they said. The people fled in fear. The forty children stayed with him. At one time, when the time for him to wake up came, Shora woke up. The people were gone, everything was quiet. The forty donkeys were with him, and the forty children were around him. – What is this? – he was startled. The forty children explained the situation. – The people of the thousand-house Zhasyl Turks fled when they said they would "attack." We stayed with you because we could not bear to part with you, – they said. – Oh, then do not die for me. Find your people while you are safe! With the forty donkeys, How can I manage alone? If God raises me, I will bring the end of times To the head of the Turks. If Allah keeps me safe, One day I will catch up with you, And I will follow you, – and he gave permission to all. He piled the forty donkeys in the open field. He grazed the forty donkeys alone. As Alibi was coming, he saw Shora from afar: – Look at that scoundrel! Let him lie down and vomit blood! "If he is a khan, he will send for the treasure; if he is a commoner, he will send for me!" – he said. Then Shora spoke: – If you take the treasure, Take it to the khan. If what you desire is the spotted horse, Take it by showing your strength! – he said. Then Alibi said: – Do not take the treasure, Do not take it to the khan, This is not the khan's wish, Do not take it, do not fall into trouble! – Shora stood up and said: – Take the treasure, Take it to the khan! If you do not take it, you know yourself, The sister you saw yesterday Will be needed again one day, May your blood not spill! – he said. Alibi's cough was a cough, What he spat was a spit, Like a falcon, he lunged forward, Rushing towards the boy, Then Shora lunged, Striving like a hawk. Unable to contain his anger, he grappled with Alibi and took him to the top of a hill, throwing him down. After Alibi fell from the horse, the remaining forty panicked and fled towards the impassable water. They stretched their necks like eagles, outpacing the ground. They rolled the forty into forty different places, leaving them scattered. Taking the forty donkeys and forty horses, he followed his people. The people said, "The heavy camp of the Zhasyl Turks has come!" and fled, leaving their livestock and belongings behind. He went alone and stopped his people. The people settled down quietly. He was about to lie down to sleep when his mother said: – Do not lie down, my son, – she said, – Once you lie down, you will not wake up for twenty days. If the thousand-house Zhasyl Turks come after us, they will kill you and raid the people. You have a place called Qazan, and a people called Tamas. If you can leave safely from us and reach your relatives while you are alive, even if the Turks come, they cannot touch our little ones, – after saying this, the boy jumped up, hearing the words "You have a people, you have a homeland," and he became happy, spurred the spotted horse, and set off, shouting "Shu!" Then Shora said as he was walking: – In the heart of the Turks, On the high hill of Shambyl, Where the forty-house Tamas has settled, There is no one who has worn unclean clothes, Who has not spoken to God, Who has not traveled a day's journey, Who has not stuck his head into another's house. He is a khan of his own, He is a lord of his own, I am Shora, the son of Narik, I am going to Qazan. Until I reach Qazan, May it not rain, may it not snow, May it not snow, may it not freeze, If it does not freeze, may it rain blood, Why should I turn my horse's head?! Then as Shora was coming, he saw Tasyrl the marksman lying at the head of a stone spring. "Because he had no arrows to shoot, no sword to fight, he killed Alibi," it was said that Khan Karakhan had sent: – Go ahead and wait for him, hiding, and shoot Shora, killing him alone, and come back boiling with rage! – he said. Tasyrl the marksman could see from a day's distance and hear from the southern side. When Shora saw Tasyrl the marksman, he spoke to his horse: – Oh my dear Shubaar, You have a mane on your neck, You have lungs and a belly. If you are not an animal, You are a wise creature among men. Do not let that wicked one Load his gun with bullets, Do not let him take up arms, When he stands up, Do not let him rise from his place, Do not let him turn his neck To look around. In the blink of an eye, Bring me to him, Grab him by the throat, Throw him to the ground, Let my strength be free, Let me start a movement, Let me wipe out the enemy, My dear, what strength do you have?! (Horse's words:) – You are Shora, and I am Shubaar, From my mane, a gust of wind will blow. When I rush, I will choke you if you are near. My four legs are made of steel, I have wings like a flying bird. When I gallop and shout "Shu!" Who can withstand my speed?! If you feed me with tail fat, If you weigh me down with two poods of sand, Shu, my Shubaar, if you say "Shu!" When I run for thirty days, Then I will sweat from me. You said you would test me, I will do as you said. I will cry to God, In this world, who can match us, Who can be like us? – and the horse galloped away. As soon as he opened his mouth to say "Go," he reached and grabbed Tasyrl the marksman by the throat. – Spare me, hero, spare me! "I thought I was a hero too," I used to say. I am not a hero; I am a coward; you are the true hero. Let us embrace and be friends, – he said. – Alright, let’s be friends. But later, people will say: "Since Tasyrl the marksman and hero Shora could not grapple with each other, they became friends." Let it be clear that I won and you lost. If your intention to be friends with me is true, give me one of your ears! – he said. When you tie your life like a fly, when you tie a drop of your blood to yourself, if you do not give me one of your ears, what kind of friendship is that?! – he said. – Alright, alright, better to sacrifice an ear than to face another calamity! If you ask for it, that ear is not lost in the field. Let it be a pattern left behind for the future generations! – and he cut off one of his ears and gave it to Shora. Shora took it, put it on his belt, and let him go safely to his people: – If you go, greet your lord Khan Karakhan. To his five-gated abode, "Shora has left," let them not covet my remaining livestock and people. I have a land called Tamas, I have a place called Qazan. I will go to that land until I turn back, let them not harm my old mother and father, my living relatives, my livestock in the pasture, – and he went on his way. As he was walking, There lay a dry, barren land, A desert where no wild ass roams, A lake called "No bird lands." There lay a multitude of livestock, An old man setting traps. Then the old man raised his head and spoke: – May the road be blessed, may the road be blessed, May you be well and strong! Your horse's hair is thick, It seems to have seen many attacks, Your brow is furrowed, It seems your night’s sleep has been disturbed. You are the child who has milk on your lips! When I look ahead and behind, You blaze like a fire. Like a hungry eagle, You are poised like a falcon, Where are you going?! – If you ask about my great-grandfather, I am the one who walks with the cry of "Black Bull," I am the forty-house Tamas. If you ask about my father, I am Shora, the son of Narik. I am going to my place called Qazan, To my people called Tamas To get acquainted. – Shora, son of Narik, there is a day that God will show you! – and he jumped up, – Oh, my brother, my heart, my lungs, my kidneys! – and he jumped up and began to greet him. They were relatives of his father. – What are you doing in this desolate yellow steppe? – they asked. – Oh, my dear, is there not a saying, "The crow eats the fallen goose"? Once we were all together, our livestock were safe, when the Kazakhs attacked the Kalmyks, they put a boy named Sadyrkul at the bottom of the bag. That Sadyrkul grew up, found his people, and brought an army from the Kalmyks, and in a short day, he attacked our people forty times, taking our livestock and not being satisfied, like a star in the sky, he selected and took ten girls. I heard that there is no man born among our people to go look for him, and I am setting traps on his path. – Is there anyone in your land who can recognize a man besides you? – they asked. – There is an elder named Esim, he is not idle either. He gathers those who eat and rest: "Let’s go to the Kalmyks," he is probably dragging those who cannot ride a horse. He will meet you on your way, – and they parted ways. As he was walking, a large group of people came directly towards him. There was one sitting there, looking like a burnt log, with no sign of leading anyone. – May the road be blessed, may the road be blessed, May you be well and strong! Your horse's hair is thick, It seems to have seen many attacks, Your brow is furrowed, It seems your night’s sleep has been disturbed. You are the child who has milk on your lips! Your face looks warm, My heart is melting, Your two eyes are anxious, Like a hungry wolf, My dear, where are you going? – he said. – If you ask about my great-grandfather, I am the one who walks with the cry of "Black Bull," I am the forty-house Tamas. If you ask about my father, I am Shora, the son of Narik. I am going to my place called Qazan, To my people called Tamas That is where I am heading, – when he said this, the burnt old man jumped up and cried: – Oh my dear, is this my reality or a dream?! Is it true that I see you? – and he rushed to embrace him, kissing him on one side and then the other, saying, "I have just seen the light of this world!" – and he cried, unable to suppress his sobs. – Oh, my dear, may God grant you life, let your joy be seen by the next generations! Go to Qazan, your friends are there, your mothers are there, your sisters are there, let them see you and rejoice! "A large army is the sacrifice of the people, a guard is the sacrifice of the hand." We are all sacrifices that have come out of the egg. Now even if we die, we are grateful to God. When you give birth to a son like you, it is equal to us even in death, – he said. – Oh, brothers, do not say that, say this: "God has given you." When there is no enemy to shoot, no hero to fight, no equal to resist: "Where has the spear-wielding hero of this people gone? Did all the men die in my time, and are the remaining ones women?" – while I was looking around with my eyes wide open, how can I do it?! How can I go to the side of the remaining children and women?! Let’s go, where is the enemy, "where is the enemy?" – and he ordered me to be taken there. Leave this heap of scattered, noisy people, when they see a person, they will be frightened and lose their spirit. When the enemy sees this, they will crush us, – after saying this, he turned back the crowd: – I will see the joy of my dear, I will go ahead and find death myself! – and he walked with forty men with Esim the elder. After separating from the crowd, Shubaar the horse began to prance this way and that, not standing under Shora, and after hurting his hand: – Come, brothers, let’s test the horses in the wilderness, let’s see who can run! Let it be a good omen, – and when he said "Go!" Shubaar the horse did not listen to him and disappeared from sight. Those who saw it were left with their mouths open, their nostrils flared, staring blankly at the sky, not knowing whether to move forward or turn back. They were astonished, their feet moving forward while their bodies seemed to be retreating. Shora, knowing that he could not stop after that, flew to the top of the Kapshagay mountain, which reached the sky, soaring like a bird. When he looked back, he saw the thick army of Kalmyks crawling like black worms, moving like ants, their toes bending, their ribs aching. "I will not go out in front of them; it would be foolish; I will follow behind," – he thought, and from the high ground, he darted down into the low ground, quickly catching up with them. He was so startled that he could not even speak to ask for directions. – What are you doing? – they asked. Then he replied to Sadyrkul: – I have dug a ditch, I have been searching for water in vain. I have lost something, I have been looking for nothing. There are no six horses, There is no hundred-weight bay horse. What can I do? Its bell was jingling, Its gait was staggering, Its bag was made of velvet, And I have no ten horses. He recognized the words. Just startled, those words came to his mouth: – Shoot down the lone one, Wipe out the lone one, Pull down the lone one! – he said. While he was babbling about this and that, without letting him speak, he pressed him to his side and rolled him down the Kapshagay mountain, then returned and attacked the thick army like a sheep. He slaughtered them, cut their noses, buried them alive, stripped them, and left them scattered. Alone, he climbed to the top of Kapshagay and rested while the forty men behind him were terrified, their spirits gone, and they barely managed to reach him. – What did you see, what did you know? – Is there a sight of the people or the enemy? – when they asked: – I saw nothing. There is someone rolling here. I have not spoken to anyone, – he said. When they went there, it was Sadyrkul. – What are you doing? – they asked. – Do you think I am mad to lie here of my own free will? A hero named Shora, son of Narik, came out, and he alone is great, like a dust cloud, he has beaten me, crushed my toes, burned my skin, and rolled me like a head of cabbage, what should I do if I do not lie down?! – he said. Then they cut Sadyrkul's nose, and they all gathered together, rising and setting off to attack the remaining Kalmyk people, stabbing, trampling, crushing, and thoroughly gutting them, taking all the livestock and people that had fallen into their hands, chewing the heads of those who had come to face them, driving away the livestock of those who did not resist, turning their sons into firewood and their daughters into wives, returning safely to their homeland, filled with red silk and white cloth, and they filled Qazan. The forty-house Tamas had been taken away by the thousand-house Zhasyl Turks, led by Karakhan. Tasyrl the marksman said: – Do not touch this; it will lead to trouble, – he said many times. No one listened to his words. "The dust of the foot, the voice of the lone one, will it be heard?" After that, Tasyrl the marksman came alone as a messenger. Hero Shora took Tasyrl the marksman with him and went alone to attack the thousand-house Zhasyl Turks, stabbing, crushing, and driving them away, and brought the people back safely to their many herds in Qazan. Thus, all his goals were achieved, and he reached the end of his journey. In our childhood, we used to hear: "If you ask about Tamas, hero Shora fought everywhere. He took all the wooden pens, summer pastures, and winter camps. Will you give your child for that? In the end, they said: 'The Russians will take this land!' and fled to Istanbul," we hear.
