Tattibike
This event took place earlier, at the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, when the foundation of the Kazakh state was not shaken and the attacks of the Dzungar Kalmyks were not particularly intense. On the sunny side of the Karatau, the Shymyr clan's Shynqozha ancestor's son Kyrgyzali was preparing to move with his large herd to the winter pasture around Tashkent towards the end of autumn. Rich Kyrgyzali was preparing for a grand wedding for his sons Kalymbet and Kazymbet, who had grown up together. He had already driven two forty-seven herds of livestock for the bride price and had completely settled the dowries. In such a situation, the grooms had the right to visit their fathers-in-law's village, bring gifts, and play the bride's game. This is an old Kazakh tradition. One of Kyrgyzali's sons, Kalymbet, fell ill while staying at his bride's village, and his younger brother Kazymbet took the bride first. Kalymbet died from the illness that surrounded him in his father-in-law's village, and the promised bride Tattibike was shrouded in mourning before she could even cross the threshold of her new home. Tattibike was as wise as she was beautiful, and her spirit and courage were comparable to that of a brave warrior. Now, Tattibike adorned the spear of her deceased fiancé with a mourning tassel and tied it beside her white yurt. She hung her other weapons inside her yurt. Thus, a year passed. A memorial feast was held for Kalymbet, and the respected members of Tattibike's village, the able men, set out to deliver the feast to the in-laws' village. Several robbers, having observed this favorable moment for the wealthy horse-owning village, drank from a distant house, learned the situation, and later drove away a large herd of livestock. They killed two horse herders who tried to stop them. Upon hearing this, the mourning bride Tattibike donned her deceased fiancé's armor, strapped on her weapons, mounted a mourning horse with a cropped tail, and pursued the robbers. The robbers, unaware that Tattibike was a girl, attacked her with a spear. Trained in military skills from a young age, she dodged the blue spears and killed one robber with her spear, knocking another off his horse. The rest fled. The girl brought the corpse of the dead robber to her village. The frightened herd of horses was saved from the robbers. When the Kipchaks returned to their village after hearing that their livestock had been attacked, they welcomed the mourning Tattibike, who had brought one robber dead and the other alive, with respect. At that time, it was customary for a bride's fate to be decided a year after the memorial feast for her deceased fiancé. Thus, having fulfilled the last debt to his prematurely departed son, Kyrgyzali came to Tattibike's village with his younger son Kazymbet. According to Kazakh tradition, a bride whose fiancé has died must marry another man from the same village. In this case, Tattibike was supposed to marry her brother-in-law Kazymbet. Pleased with his daughter who had captured two robbers, Tattibike's father granted her full freedom. This meant that the girl's fate was in her own hands; she could choose whom to marry. If Tattibike decided not to marry her brother-in-law, it was her choice, but in such a case, her father would have to return the bride price he received from the suitor. After that, the girl could marry whomever she wished. However, if she did this, it would be a disgrace for Kyrgyzali and his relatives. Because then the widow would be considered to have disdained the Shynqozha village. Understanding this situation clearly, Tattibike invited her relatives and the respected members of her in-laws' village, along with her brother-in-law and his young wife. Once all the invited guests had arrived, the girl's father informed the in-laws that Tattibike had been granted her freedom, and now it was entirely up to her. Tattibike conveyed her decision publicly as follows: – My native land, my in-laws who have given me a bride price. Even though I am a mourning bride, I cannot remain silent. First of all, I have a condition to present to my father, and only if he agrees will I speak. – My daughter, you have performed a feat that not every man can achieve. Whatever your condition is, I accept it. Speak on, – said her father. – Then let the robber who tried to steal your livestock be brought before the people. Let them know that I am a girl! – she said. After bringing the robber before the people, Tattibike said to him: – Hey, robber! After coming to our village and eating our feast, you wanted to take possession of our livestock, which is poorly guarded. You killed our two horse herders. Now your life is in my hands. Whether I kill you or cut off your ears and make you a slave is up to me. You see that I am a girl. Now my demand is this: you must pay compensation to the families of our innocent horse herders who were killed. You will pay each of them one herd of horses (each herd contains fifteen to twenty horses). You will not pay compensation for the dead robber because you unjustly killed our people and tried to steal our livestock. If you fulfill what I have said within half a month, I will send both you and your dead companion back to your people; if you cannot fulfill it, I will raid your village and take it by force. – Oh, I submit to your decree; we will fulfill everything you have said on time, – swore the robber. After one robber was sent away dead and the other alive, Tattibike now presented her demands to her in-laws: – God has taken your son Kalymbet. There was no way to intervene. After waiting a year for his spirit and holding a memorial feast, my father has granted me my freedom. I have a condition to present before I come to your village as a bride, and only if you agree will I go to my brother-in-law's village. Both Kyrgyzali and his second son Kazymbet, along with his wife, urged her to speak. – When our ancestors made a marriage alliance and shared the tail and liver, no one thought of me becoming a second wife when I obeyed my parents' wishes. If Kalymbet were alive, I would have come to your village as a great sister-in-law. "If sisters-in-law are harmonious, there is plenty of food; if relatives are harmonious, there are many horses," they say. A woman is created with a narrow path. If I simply marry Kazymbet, I will become a second wife and will be envious. But even if born from one man, the children of two wives belong to two different clans. I do not want to be a second wife and be beaten by the first wife like Domalaq Ana. My friend, if you accept me as your sister-in-law and do not envy your husband, then I will come to your village. I will call the threshold of the house I enter the threshold of Kalymbet, not Kazymbet. You are a tall woman, slender like a pine tree. I foresee that you will also bear two sons, and I will bear two sons as well. Our children will grow up strong like pines. The two sons born from you and their descendants will be rich and brave. The foal of a noble stallion is at least born strong. You are descendants of the Bekers of Baydibek and Dulat. "The goodness of a man comes from his maternal uncle, and the goodness of a house comes from its wood," they say. If you marry girls from a good mixed community, the boys born from you will become both judges and nobles, and they will also be merry and skilled hunters. And the two sons born from me, along with their descendants, will be rich and brave, and they will bring unending fortune to their people. The nature of power and nobility is different; the greatness of fortune is indeed in that nobility and power. No one goes before a judge or a noble. Only united relatives can hold the fortune that has descended upon them. Even if I am a lowly woman, my bravery and wealth are enough for me alone. Greatness comes from a mother. Therefore, for the sake of future generations, I chose to be a sister-wife rather than a rival. Kazymbet's wife agreed to Tattibike's condition in front of the people and swore an oath.
