The banner of Tole Bi
The wise Tole Bi, who served as a model for all Kazakhs, passed away at the age of ninety-three. According to Tole's own will, the people began to gather to take him to the city of Tashkent, where he had ruled for many years, to bury him next to the famous Babur's maternal grandfather, Junis Khan. It is known how far the sacred land of Kazygurt, where Tole Bi lived, is from Tashkent. Transporting the body itself is not an easy task. The crowd did not even consider that difficulty. They were determined to deliver the wise son of the Kazakh people without fail. Preparations were being made to send the Bi on his final journey. Amid the bustling crowd, Tole's Kyrgyz wife slipped out of the mourning house, where the lamentation was taking place. Since her husband’s passing, she had not stopped crying, and her eyes were red, her face swollen, and her cheeks hollowed out. The villagers who were serving the mourners were running back and forth. Holding sticks, they cried out, "Oh, my brother," and among the relatives descended from Otebai and Alibai stood Tole's own sons. Among them, he focused his gaze on his son, Kozhamzhar, but the latter did not notice him. Unable to find the right moment to call him over, he instructed a young man who was passing by to let his son meet him. Upon hearing the words "Your mother is calling," Kozhamzhar stepped aside, and his mother signaled him to come closer, turning away. His son followed her quietly. Once they were away from the crowd, his son asked, "What do you say, mother?" "My son, although you have many paternal relatives, you are alone from your mother's side. There is a saying among the Kazakhs: 'The rival's ashes are also a rival.' While your father was alive, it was not noticeable. Now, like a wart that has surfaced on the water, you will become visible. In such moments, there can be conflicts not only among women but also among children. At that time, you will feel lonely, my son," she sighed heavily. "Oh, mother! You are saying strange things!" said Kozhamzhar. When his mother heard such words from her son, she looked at him intently and said: "Your father has passed away. Your relatives will soon start to poke at you. If we are alive, we will see him again. What I am saying now is this: bring a mare from the horses and slaughter it quickly; I will prepare the feast. Load two yurts onto two camels! I will take care of the firewood, water, and cooking utensils myself. After we lay your father to rest, let the bearers set up the two yurts on the way back, and we will wait for them. The road is long; some will get tired, and some will get thirsty. Let us be the first to offer food from our home," she said. The bearers returned after laying one of the noble sons of the people to rest. The hot sun dried the lips of the many people, whose hearts were crushed with grief, as they returned to the village. After a long journey, the lips of the horsemen and pedestrians were parched from thirst. Although they wanted to stop for a moment, they could not do so. The crowd caught sight of the two yurts set up ahead and the smoke rising. At that moment, Tole's son Kozhamzhar stepped forward and grabbed the reins of the horse belonging to the revered Ishan, who was the patron of the Kazygurt region. "Grandfather, grandfather! Which child does not grieve when his father's body touches the ground? How can we go against God's command? It is the will of fate; there is birth and there is death. We have no choice but to accept it. Let this be one of the honors I show to my father. This yurt that is set up is my home. Please dismount, read the Quran, and taste the salt of the food," he pleaded earnestly. The Ishan, who had been silently observing the young man struggling to suppress his sobs, turned his horse towards the house. Tole's Kyrgyz wife, dressed in mourning, came out crying loudly to meet the bearers. The mourning crowd was thus involuntarily delayed. The elders settled into the yurt, while the younger ones sat on the carpets spread outside. After the Quran was recited, the table was laid, and food and drink were brought. At that moment, the flag that Tole had held during his lifetime, adorned with a black fringe, was placed at the right door of the yurt. Kozhamzhar's mother took that flag and placed it on the ground. After the Quran was recited and blessings were given, the people began to rise from their places. When Kozhabek and Zholan went to take the flag, it was not there. The crowd was bewildered, and the other children looked on in astonishment as if they had seen a dream. "Where is the flag? Where is the flag?" At that moment, Kozhamzhar's mother said: "Why are you shouting? I am also the lawful wife of your father Tole, my children. If I am your mother, this house is also Tole's own home. The flag was set up here today, and it will be kept in this household until it is warmly given," she said. "To lose the flag means to lose authority. How did this happen? Did we bring it here only to lose it, or is that not how it should be? There is a people waiting ahead. We need to take the flag and set it up in the big house," thought the other children, and began to argue. In fact, there was a commotion and a dispute arose. Because this house is also one of Tole's homes, and Kozhamzhar is indeed Tole's own son, and his mother is his lawful wife, it is also true that the people gathered for the funeral first read the Quran and tasted the food in this house. Essentially, Kozhamzhar's mother's claim is also valid. However, the first wife’s house is preparing and waiting for the bearers. Which side should they take? This is the reverse of the saying, "If you pull too hard, the cart will break; if you pull too gently, the ox will die." The crowd was waiting for the decision of the respected elders. "O people! If you seek justice and acknowledge honesty, let me speak about the authority," said the Ishan. "Speak, speak!" the crowd shouted. "Then, wherever the flag is set up, it must remain there. There is no need for further quarrels," he said, giving his blessing and rising from his place. The crowd approved this decision and also rose from their places. Thus, Tole Bi's flag was passed to the children of Kozhamzhar. During the period of excess, since the items and horse gear used by Tole Bi were being taken by the short-sighted activists, he had buried and hidden them to preserve them. Those old men who had hidden these items also passed away.
