The first appearance of Abilai (Version I)
At the age of less than twenty, Abilai Khan had a Sart companion named Orazaulyk. They arrived at the lands of Atigai and Karauyl along the Esil River, where Abilai worked as a shepherd, tending to the horses of the wealthy Dauletkeldi. – What is your name? – he was asked. – My name is Sabalaq! – he replied. The wealthy man told his wife: – Do not treat him like other servants, take care of him! He has some special qualities. If you ask how, even if he goes six days and six nights without food, he will not eat a single morsel with his own hands. And even if he eats half a bowl of food, he will not give the leftovers to anyone. He also does not sit on the ground. If he cannot find anything to sit on, he takes off his clothes and sits on them. And when he sits outside, he is more modest than a woman, going to the other side of a hill to sit, or covering his head with his clothes. Moreover, when he sleeps, the place remains brightly lit, as if there is a burning lamp, – they say. At that time, a formidable enemy named Khatysiban, a Kalmyk, had taken the Kazakh horses. The Kazakhs set out, calling themselves "tail horses." Karakerei Qabanbay, Qanjyghaly Bogenbay, Kaz Dauysty Qazybek, Shakshaqugly Zhanibek, Kokzharaly Kokzhal Barak, Shanyshqyly Berdikozha, Syrym Malaisary, Sary from the Kerey and Uaq tribes, all set out to confront the Kalmyks. The Kalmyks had fortified their position, creating a defense around themselves, and when the Kazakh heroes rushed to attack, the hidden marksmen shot them down, preventing the Kazakhs from taking their horses. After several days of being stuck, unable to separate the horses from the Kalmyks, they decided to retreat, feeling hopeless. Then, one of the shepherds, Sabalaq, realizing that the Kazakhs would return, went off on his own, dismounted from his horse, tied his cloth belt to the end of his whip, raised it like a flag, and went alone to the Kalmyk fortress, shouting "Abilai!" The marvel of God's power is that no arrow could pierce him, nor could a sword harm him. He entered the Kalmyk fortress alone, breaking through, and after causing a commotion like a herd of horses, the Kazakh heroes rushed in from all sides, defeating the Kalmyks and returning with a great bounty. After defeating the enemy and calming their spirits, the Argin and Naiman heroes said: – Yesterday, no spirit was left uninvoked, no battle cry uncalled, and it all proved useless. Although he is alone, his essence and lineage are unknown, he is superior to all of us, and his spirit is strong. There was an old saying: "Do not underestimate a sheep's tail, if it suits you, it is a ram." Come, let us elevate him to Khan! – they said, and brought him to the beloved of Atigai Esenaman, raised a white yurt, provided him with six wives, and placed him on a white felt, crowning him as Khan. When the son of Tobylbay, the poet Arystan, was captured, he said to Khan Kenesary: – Kene Khan, if you love me, I am your servant, Though you may hate me, I am your Alash. I am the son of Atigai, who provided six wives for your father! – and upon hearing this, Kenesary Khan, who was about to kill him, shed tears and said: – Hero, take whatever you desire! – and gave him a horse, a camel to lead, a gun around his neck, and sent him back to his people with thirty companions. This is the place where Abilai Khan first became Khan of the Kazakhs. He remained in Kokshetau until his death, throughout his old age. This is also mentioned in the poem of Arystan: In Makharzhy, the rich trade, A brave warrior breaks through the thick enemy. If you ask where Abilai resided, He was Khan for forty-eight years in Kokshetau. In ancient times, the Saryarka was ruled and inhabited by the Nogai. There is a saying: "When there were ten Nogai, when Ormambet died, the people of Ormambet were scattered like a wild horse!" After that, the Kalmyks ruled and inhabited the land. During the reign of the Kalmyk Khan Khatysiban, known for "ten Oymauyt, nine Torgauyt, and the heavy hand of Ayuken," Abilai Khan was the one who drove the Kalmyks away from Saryarka, causing a rain of black blood upon them. The era that Abilai lived through was unprecedented; no one had seen such a time from Adam until Abilai, and none have seen it since. In the world, there are eighteen thousand souls, This word has astonished those who know. Young men, if you listen closely, There has been no Khan like Abilai among the Kazakhs! – this is the Abilai who became a saying among the Kazakh people: "A bad bird that does not hunt is the labor of a horse; besides Abilai, no other ruler is the labor of flesh."
