The life of Ablai in his youth (Version III)
Abilai was left an orphan at a young age after his father passed away. Abilai was a servant under a khan named Tole Bi from the Great Horde. Then Tole Bi said, "Let his name be Sabalaq." At that time, Abilai wore a large fur hat and tended to camels. One day, while returning from the village, Tole Bi saw Abilai sleeping on all fours. Tole Bi then told his companions: – Look how Sabalaq is sleeping! Did you notice this? – he said. His companions replied: – How would we know? – they said. – He will rule over four tribes, – he said. After that, when Tole returned in the evening, he took Abilai off the camel and made him tend to the horses. One day, Tole Bi slaughtered an animal to test Sabalaq: – Boil the head of the animal and give it to Sabalaq in the field, let’s see what he will do? – he sent three or four people. When they arrived, Sabalaq came out to greet them. – We brought this head for you to eat, as Tole ordered, – they said, handing him the head. Abilai dismounted, spread his cloak, and said to them: – "Better to share than to eat alone," you are older brothers, come here, – he said. The men dismounted. Following the lead, Sabalaq took a knife and gave one ear to one of them, the other ear to another, gouged out the two eyes and gave them to two others, and ate the tongue himself. After finishing the head, the men returned to tell Tole Bi. Sabalaq was now eighteen years old. At that time, the Kazakhs and the Kalmyks were gathering for battle. – I wish to join this war, – Sabalaq asked Tole Bi for permission. Tole Bi replied: – My son, no, you might die somewhere, – and did not grant permission. "Grandfather, I will go," he insisted. – Alright, my son, if you want to go, go, – he gave his blessing. He put Abilai on a racing horse and sent him to join the large Kazakh army. The Kazakhs and Kalmyks faced each other in battle. The leader of the Kazakhs was the elderly Boğembai, who was eighty years old. A brave warrior from the Kalmyks came out on a gray horse for a duel. No one from the Kazakhs stepped forward against him. Then Boğembai asked: – Does no one dare to face him? – and began to prepare to go to the battlefield himself. At that moment, Sabalaq galloped up to Boğembai: – Let me go, grandfather, – he said. Boğembai looked at him and said: – Go, my son, – and gave him his horse and spear. Sabalaq shouted "Abilai, Abilai!" and charged at the enemy. They both thrust their spears at each other. Unable to overpower each other with the spears, they grappled and fought with daggers from their horses. There, Abilai seized the Kalmyk warrior by the throat, pulled him off the horse, and with one strike of his dagger, he beheaded him, then charged into the enemy shouting "Abilai!" Seeing this, the Kalmyks fled. The fleeing Kalmyks were crushed, referred to as "young birds" and "scattered like leaves." The one leading the Kazakhs was Khan Abilmambet. He was a relative of Abilai. After the battle ended, he said: – Where is the boy who defeated the Kalmyk warrior? Find him for me! – he commanded. Then someone brought him: – Here, this is the boy who defeated the Kalmyk warrior, – he said. Abilmambet Khan jumped off his horse and, putting a noose around his neck, began to cry. – They said there was an orphan left from our Abilai. When you shouted your grandfather's name, my bones ached, are you he? – How would I know, if I am, I am, – replied Sabalaq. Abilmambet Khan took Abilai home with him. After settling in, he handed over his khanate to Abilai. Abilai's real name was Abilmansur. It is said that he became known as Abilai after the enemy heard him shout "Abilai!" I heard this from Abai and have kept it in my memory.
