About Abilay (Version IV)
Abilai's name was Abilmansur. His father was the khan of the Qyzylbast. When Abilmansur turned five, his father died. After the khan's death, the yurt was left without a master. Abilmansur lost his inheritance and wandered off to foreign lands.
He came among the Three Juzes and tended to the camels of the Uysyn Tole bi. When asked, he would say, "My name is Sabalaq." He then moved on to the Qyzyljar region and tended to the horses of a bi named Dauletkeldi. Dauletkeldi's wife said:
– "Do not see this Sabalaq as just a servant; he has some qualities. Even if he goes six days without food, he does not eat from his own hands and gives the leftovers to others. He does not drink from the vessel, and he sits with his clothes underneath him. Otherwise, he covers himself with his clothes. When he sleeps, his dreams are bright, as if there is a lamp."
After the wife's words, they set up a separate tent for Sabalaq and took care of him.
One day, the Kalmyk warrior Karaspan led a raid and took away the Kazakh horses. After this, the Kazakhs called it "qylquyryq." Among the prominent warriors in the raid were: Karakerey Qabanbay, Qanjyghaly Bogenbay, Kaz dausy Qazybek, Shakshaquly Zhanibek, Baltakerey Tursynbay, Syrym Malaisary, Kökjarly Barak, and Sybyzghy Berdiqozha.
The Kalmyks dug a deep trench and stationed their marksmen in it, while they set up a feast nearby and had girls and women sing and recite poetry. The Kazakh warriors, unaware of the trap, gathered around the girls and women thinking to play, and the marksmen shot them down. Many Kazakh warriors suffered losses this way. In one-on-one combat, the Kalmyk warriors crushed them without mercy. At that moment, the Kazakhs became trapped and panicked.
Then, from within the group, Sabalaq (Abilmansur) approached the Kazakh khan and said:
– "Is there no man left among the spear-wielding warriors and the fluttering banners?" I have come to ask for permission to fight in single combat," and after receiving the khan's permission, he tied his belt to the tip of his spear and charged forward. He took down the heads of the Kalmyk warriors in single combat and entered their ranks. He created a hole where he entered and a door where he exited, and as he folded like a falcon, he went in three times and out three times, causing the Kalmyks to scatter like sparrows and flee like rotten cheese. At that moment, the watching Kazakhs charged at the Kalmyks. In this campaign, the Kalmyks were defeated. The Kazakhs returned.
– "If the sheep's bone fits in your hand, do not say it is a young sheep; if it is wise, call it an elder," they said. Although this Sabalaq's origins were unknown, his fortune was great. In the end, he proved worthy of defending the people from enemies, my lady," they said. After Bogenbay's words, the people unanimously elected a khan and brought a wife. The place where Abilmansur was elected khan was the village of Atigay Yesenaman, located in the foothills of Kokshetau.
