Abilai's Place of Breaching the Fortress (Version V)
At the age of 12, Abilay Khan was accompanied by a Sart named Orazalyk. They arrived in the city of Turkestan and served King Abilmambet. Unable to settle there, he tended to the camels of Tole Bi from the Great Zhuz Uysyn. Not being able to stay there either, he moved to Saryarka and came to the village of Atigay-Karauyl, where he tended to the camels of the wealthy Daulatkeldi. – What is your name? – he was asked. – My name is Sabalak, – he replied. He told his wife: – Do not treat him like other herders, take care of him! This Sabalak is definitely not a Sart; if he were like that Orazalyk Sart, he would be different, with eyes as small as a palm, feet as wide as a camel's, eating and drinking whatever he sees, drooling and sitting there senseless. This Sabalak has nothing to do with anything; his thoughts are of wisdom, he does not smile or laugh. He does not frown. Even if he goes six days and nights without food, he will not eat with his own hands. If he eats half a bowl of food, he will not be satisfied unless he gives the leftovers to someone else. He does not sit on the ground. If there is nothing to sit on, he takes off his clothes and sits on them in the open field. When he sleeps, he is completely illuminated. Treat him with respect, for he has a special quality; let us not fall into misfortune, – he would say. At that time, the Kalmyk Khan Syban, who had raised the Kazakh horses, attacked. All the heroes of the Kazakh people set out. Karakerey Qabanbay, Kanjyghaly Bogeimbai, Kaz Dauysty Qazybek, Shakshakuly Zhanibek, Kokzharly Kokzhal Barak, Shanyshkyly Berdikozha, Syrym Malaisary, and from the Kerei Uak, Sary and Bayan all set off to confront the Kalmyks. The Kalmyks had built a fort, surrounded it with defenses, and set up a camp with women and girls. When the Kazakh heroes charged at the camp, the hidden marksmen on the other side shot them down. The Kalmyks did not let the Kazakhs succeed. Even after several days of being trapped, unable to separate the horses from the Kalmyks, they were disheartened and decided to retreat. At that time, Sabalak was also pursuing the Kalmyks alongside the horses. Once he saw that the Kazakhs were retreating, he dismounted his horse, tied his cloth belt to the top of his spear as a flag, and boldly entered the Kalmyk fort, shouting "Abilay, Abilay!" He broke through the Kalmyk fort alone, making the entrance a door and the exit a hole, after which the Kazakh heroes rushed in from all sides. They defeated the Kalmyks, plundering and taking spoils of war. After defeating the enemy and calming their spirits, the heroes of the Argin and Naiman said: – Yesterday, no spirit was left uncalled, no battle cry was left unshouted. None of them interfered with us. Even though he was alone, his fate is greater than all of ours, and his spirit is strong. There was a saying from the old days: "Do not underestimate the lamb, if it suits you, treat it as a ram." Let us elevate him to the rank of khan, – they said, bringing him to the center of Atigay-Karauyl, raising a white yurt, providing him with six wives, and crowning him with a white felt.
