According to legend, Abilay, who came from Turkestan, was once riding with his closest relative, Khan Abilmambet, on the same horse with his relative Oraz. For some time, he served the wealthy Kyrgyz, Zhaksylyk Dauletbay, from the Karauyl clan, taking care of his horses. Dauletbay's wife notices that the foreigner never asks for food unless it is offered to him. She is greatly surprised that he accepts the offered food without enthusiasm and never eats from dirty dishes. This behavior is completely unusual for the Kyrgyz. The master also pays attention to this, and after interrogating Oraz and learning about his lineage, he gives him his best horse and takes him to Khan Abilmambet. This horse was the famous Shalkuyryk. It was with this Shalkuyryk that the young sultan first charged into battle, earning Abilay the title of hero.
