The legend of the friendship between Abilay and Amir Sana
The Kalmyk Khan Galdan Tseren has passed away. According to ancient tradition, one of his relatives should inherit the throne. Galdan has no sons other than Amir Sana, so he is naturally the only heir. However, the people did not follow this tradition and elected someone else to the khanate. "The Kalmyk khan must be of Kalmyk descent, Amir Sana is of Kazakh descent, we cannot elect him," the public categorically refused to acknowledge Amir Sana as the heir.
This is not a fabricated slander; the people have concrete evidence for it. The events unfolded as follows.
As Galdan grew older, he sought a girl from a distant land, from the Kalmyks along the Ural River. He did not consider it appropriate for himself to go to fetch the girl, so he sent his trusted minister with several people, providing sufficient dowry and various rituals. They brought the girl back and returned to their land with great joy.
That winter was harsh. The Kalmyk travelers stopped at a Kazakh village in Ulytau. Day and night, a fierce blizzard did not cease, and the travelers were forced to stay in that village for several days. Once the weather cleared, they arrived home without any losses.
At that moment, the khan's wife was pregnant and gave birth on her due date. A boy was born, and he was named Amir Sana. Gossip began to spread among the people: "The young wife carried this child on the way, he is the son of the Kazakh hero Otegen." Of course, this was not disclosed to the khan; it only came to light after his death.
Amir Sana could not subdue the people; someone unrelated to the throne sat on it. He was forced to seek help from outside. He went to his father's friend, Abilai, with whom Galdan had established a friendship and maintained it for a long time. Abilai welcomed his friend warmly and devised measures to bring his people under his control. However, knowing that the Kalmyks would not accept the word of brotherhood and that it could lead to resentment, Abilai decided to consult with the Russian Empire on this matter.
This decision also pleased Amir Sana. Neither of them deemed it appropriate to provoke a war between the two countries for the sake of a khanate. They sent a representative to the Russian tsar. He dispatched a military group led by a general, instructing them to "force the Kalmyks to submit if they do not willingly comply!"
"Do not bring my country to ruin for the sake of the throne," Amir Sana pleaded with Abilai and the Russian general. They approved this request.
Thus, the Russian and Kazakh dignitaries set out for the Kalmyk land, taking Amir Sana with them. However, their journey was not successful: on the way, Amir Sana died prematurely from smallpox.
