"The Meaning of 'Abilai Did Not Cross the Yellow Hill' (Version IV)"
Abilai Khan, while on a campaign to Alatau, encountered a great gathering of the Karakesek-Shanshar people. At that feast, the drunken and well-fed Shanshar's guests were idly chatting and said: – If someone were to knock off the hat from the head of the Khan, what a wrath he would unleash as a king! – when suddenly, the brother of Kazibek, known for his deep voice, "Mör tañdaly Balapan," said: – It's better to see it than just talk about it, – and stealthily, while being careless, he knocked the Khan's hat off with a twig, causing it to fall to the ground. The Khan did not show any wrath or say anything: – Today, among the "drunken and well-fed," who has any sense? – he declared, – the hat that fell to the ground cannot be worn again, – and he added, – let it stay there, – and did not allow anyone to pick it up, continuing on his way. Days passed, and that incident was forgotten. After the market became established in Kyzylzhar, the Karakesek and Suinid traders began to go to Kyzylzhar to trade. When many traders gathered, fueled by resentment over the past incident of the hat being knocked off, they captured one person from Karakesek and one from Törtüil, and buried them alive. The person taken from Karakesek was Janai, the son of Kazimbet. In the poem of Kaldybai Shöje: Kazimbet's son: Kanai, Janai, The middle one – Atimbai, the youngest – Anai. I ask for Karauzak and Saryuzak, and the black Kalpak Kolyktkesin somehow. The person taken from Törtüil was named Botakan. Abilai Khan had them buried alive and returned home. His wife said: – Törе, you are late, where have you been? – she asked. – I just buried Botakan alive, – he replied. His wife said: – It seems that we are not destined to have a taste from the Middle Horde, bring Botakan out of the grave! – she insisted. Abilai sent someone: – Let him come out of the grave! – he commanded. The man went and told Botakan, but Botakan replied: "I will not come out!" The messenger returned to Abilai and reported Botakan's refusal. Abilai himself came, pulled him by the arm: – Come out! – he ordered. Botakan replied: – I am lying in my grave where I will rest when I die. "A living person does not come out of a grave," they say. Better for me to be dead than to appear before people like this, – he said, filled with rage, and his heart burst from the strain, and he died. Upon hearing this news, the Middle Horde felt ashamed. On that day, Kazibek had already passed away, and it was the day of Kazibek's son Bekbolat, who was sixty-five years old. It was also the day of Edige's twenty-five years. Edige's winter residence was in Jaqsy Dalba at the Karagaily spring, and Bekbolat's winter residence was in Jamandy Dalba, the place where today's Batyr's Beisen is located. Bekbolat and Edige mounted their horses and gathered the Bessmira, saying: "We will attack Abilai," and prepared to march with three thousand men. Then Bekbolat and Edige sent a man to Kulyk Janabaty: – Let him be a fortune-teller and lead us, – they said. But Kulyk Janabaty did not go himself; he sent his son Janak instead. – The unworthy Kalmak who attacked his Khan, "the one who attacks his Khan does not prosper," they said. They also sent greetings to Bekbolat and Edige: "May he reconcile with Abilai and be his mediator!" Then, "On the day of the feast, three thousand men gathered, including the brave Altai Jieneli, the valiant Aida Bol Olzhabay, and many other renowned heroes," and the Kerey and Uaq were frightened and retreated inside. The Uaq remained inside, while the Kerey were brought in after Turlibek mounted his horse. Then, sitting at home, Abilai's wife said: – Abilai Khan, did you learn anything? – What should I know? – he replied. – If you do not know, Kazibek's spirit has called upon his son Bekbolat to mount his horse. "If I do not take Abilai's head, if I do not put his wife under the horse's tail, if I do not split his black cauldron, may my father Kazibek's spirit curse me!" he swore as he mounted. "Do not stand before the angry one," he said, "leave the black cauldron behind for the people. They will come and eat from the prepared cauldron. They will say, 'We have tasted from it, what is its fault?'" They will not dare to destroy it. Then they will say, "We have taken the black cauldron," and their anger will subside, their oath will be fulfilled, and they will calm down. Also, leave three thousand cattle and horses as food for the people. Let the heroes spill their blood, let them feast and be satisfied. "One who is hungry does not ask for advice for forty days," they say. And "a hungry person does not recognize his father." Once their bellies are full, they will come to their senses and realize your kingship and their own grief, and they will calm down, – she advised. Abilai Khan heeded his wife's words, leaving the black cauldron behind for the people, leaving three hundred cattle, and retreated three days' journey from Kokshetau. Then, unaware of the migration and the fright, three thousand men came and occupied Abilai's camp. Bekbolat came and, while standing on horseback, thrust his spear into the angry cauldron and spoke: – Oh, people, – he said, – Abilai Khan is not just a creation of God, look! When I left home, I had three thoughts: "If I could cut off Abilai's head, or if I could put his wife under the horse's tail, or if I could seize the black cauldron!" Now, leaving the black cauldron behind for the people means he fully understood my thoughts. No matter how much he says, God has created a great Khan! Now I have fulfilled my oath. Let us slaughter that cattle, feast on the white fat, and let your banners be stained with blood! Let us send an envoy; if God wills, we will reconcile and return joyfully, – he concluded. After Bekbolat, Tilenchi Bi saw that the cauldron was taken. The children of Abilai's Kalmak wife came to Tilenchi Bi, covering a black bull with a beautiful carpet: – I have tied it to the spirit of Kazibek! – they said, and it remained in their hands. Well, Bekbolat and Edige sent an envoy to Abilai Khan, Ormanshy Aqsary-Shotana: – Shall we teach you the words, or will you speak for yourself? – they asked, and Shotana Batyr replied: – If you teach me a lot, you will teach me thirty phrases. Once that is exhausted, what will I do? Whatever comes out of my mouth, you will hear when I return, – and he went on his way. Let me tell you what kind of person Shotana Batyr was. In Qyzyltau, there is a stone called "Shotana Tasy." When Shotana Batyr was sitting under that stone, at night, a thief stole two of his oxen from the corral. Realizing that the thief had taken the oxen at dawn, Shotana Batyr climbed to the top of the stone and shouted: – Leave my oxen! My name is Shotana; even if you hide in the hole of the earth, I will not let you go! – when the thieves were crossing the river of Tundyk, they thought, "He must be chasing us!" and fled like a stone. Shotana Batyr went to Abilai Khan, returned safely, and came before Bekbolat and Edige. – What did you say? – they asked, and he replied: – Bekbolat and Edige sent me. On the day of the feast, three thousand men gathered. Our ancestors, the former saints, used to say: "If the world is destroyed, it will fit in Bukhara; if Bukhara is destroyed, it will not fit in the world." Is the Sart who came barefoot and bare-legged not trying to fit in Saryarka? Let them pay the price for Botakan and release Janai from captivity! Let them give a "nine" for a thousand men to lead them! Let them give a thousand camels for a thousand men, a thousand horses, and a thousand cloaks! If they say, "I will be a guilty Khan," let them state where they will stand, let them name the warrior they will fight! If they say, "I will be an innocent Khan," is not a Khan a decree, and is not a black sheep a lamb? How can one who cannot endure the play of a lamb provide shelter for the one who has fallen?" – I said, and Bekbolat, pleased, responded: – I adore your mouth, and the woman who bore you! – he exclaimed. – What did he say, what did he say? – they asked. – Tomorrow, let him come to the banks of Zholdyözek, and let us take our positions on either side, – he replied. Then Olzhabay Batyr asked: – Did he ask if I am here? – he inquired. – He asked, and I said "yes," – was the answer. – Now that Sart cannot stand against us in battle. There was also Sırym Malaisary on the road that would break the golden-gated fortress, and there was Shanyshqılı Berdikozha, and there was Tarakty Baykozy Batyr. The gate was made by mixing tin and lead with copper. No one could breach it alone. So, I threw my banner to Abilai and charged at the gate, entering as if I had stepped into freshly kneaded dough. When I looked at Abilai's face, he was trembling and shaking. "If this weapon goes to battle and is used against me, it will be unbearable!" – he was so frightened that he realized there was no spirit to oppose us, – he said. From the other side of Zholdyözek, Abilai's forces arrived. Besides his own guards and attendants, there was nothing else. On one side were Bekbolat and Edige with three thousand men. Two men were coming from the yellow hands: one was Abilai, and the other was Batalkerey Tursynbay Batyr. After recognizing each other, Bekbolat and Edige mounted their horses and went out to meet them. Then, Qozgan Qulike-Bekshen's Bekshi, a marksman who could hit a target from the eye of a gazelle, prepared to aim at Abilai. – I will eliminate this Sart with one shot, – he thought, but before he could pull the trigger, Janak, the son of Janabaty, rushed in and snatched the rifle from Bekshi's hands. Abilai saw everything that was happening. On one side were two men, one a Khan and the other a hero, and on the other side were two men: the two judges of Karakesek and Suinid, who had come together at the place where the poet Kötësh had once gone as a child, preventing them from speaking and reciting poetry: – Abilai, you killed Botakan, O noble man, what was his fault that you killed him? Your head is in dispute with your people, You have brought the hand of your White Orda upon him! Abilai, your city has burned, What do you say about the slander you have spread?! If you do not release Janai today, Tomorrow your wife and children will be widowed! After that, there was no accusation or argument. The Khan reconciled with his people, and those who went returned with their hearts fulfilled. Then Abilai asked: – Who was preparing to shoot? – he inquired. – It was Qozgan Bekshi, – they replied. – He was a companion who had shared many campaigns, living off the same pot. He can easily take a life when no one is around! – he said, and to prevent his rifle from misfiring, he tied a camel to the muzzle of the rifle. – Who rushed in and caught him? – he asked. – It was Janak, the son of Janabaty, – they answered. – Can a mere man be Janabaty? He is truly a righteous judge created by God! He has sent his son to be a mediator. When a feast is held, let the "nine" that was tied to Janabaty's doorstep be released, and when the spear is raised in mourning, let Janak break it, and may one horse and cloak belong to Janak! – he decreed accordingly. "This is the place where 'Abilai did not cross the yellow hill.'" – Three things have become my unfulfilled desires, – he lamented. – One is that I did not make the price of the white horse the price of a noble man. I did not make the price of the marksman who could shoot from the eye of a gazelle the price of two noble men. One is that I did not decree the price of the shoemaker and the craftsman to be "the price of a woman!" When they said, "The enemy has come!" neither of them contributed to the manliness. One was that no one had emerged from within except for the Prophet and the Shadiyar; otherwise, all the nightingales and dulduli of other people had come out. I could not surpass this "Bessmira" people, – he concluded.
