Baltakeri Tursynbai Batyr (Version II)
When Abilai Khan set out on a campaign, there was a dark blue figure in the yellow steppe of Betpak. And when asked, – Who are you? – he replied: – If it’s not about my old boots, I am known to many; if it’s not about my old bow, I have words that can reach many. I am Baltakerey Tursynbai, – he said. – Well done, your name is clear, your appearance is known, warrior, let us be companions on this journey, – he said. – Even if I walk alone, I would often be surrounded by many. I would like to accompany you on this journey, – he said. Together with the Khan, they headed towards Alatau. Along the banks of a long river, there were many graves. Abilai Khan said to Baltakerey Tursynbai: – Is there a grave with a betağashi among those many graves over there? Go and find out, – he said, – go and explore. He went and returned: – There is only one grave with a betağashi, the rest are stone. The Khan said nothing, they went to Alatau, and whether it was Kyrgyz or Kalmyk, none could attack. Livestock fell from the cliffs, and each warrior received spoils from one camel. After winter set in, they hurried back, the cooked food was finished. They slaughtered livestock, but there was no firewood to drink hot tea. The troops were starving and weakened... – We will reach the camp, – they were saying as they walked. Abilai Khan discreetly sent two young men ahead. – There is a betağashi at the place we will camp tonight, find it and wrap yourselves in it, lie in the grave, – he said. – One of you should cover the spot well, so it looks like no one has been there. When night falls, I will send Baltakerey Tursynbai to say: “Bring the betağashi!” When he sees it and reaches for it, ask him: “Is there a price for your father’s eye in my grave?” Will he be startled? Let’s test his bravery, – he said. After the Khan gave the order, the two young men separated and went ahead, one wrapped himself in the afterlife and entered the grave, covering it as before, making it look unknown, and then hid in a ravine, while the countless troops approached and surged towards the long flowing river. The troops were starving, it was raining heavily, there was no fuel to start a fire, Abilai Khan said: – O Tursynbai the warrior, if you do not bring the betağashi from the grave you saw yesterday, the troops will die of hunger, – he said. – If you are not the one who saw it before, no one else will be able to find it, – the Khan told Tursynbai. Tursynbai: – I will go and bring it back, – he set off. He went and smashed it, cut the betağashi, and dropped it inside. Then, as he reached out to take it, from inside the grave: – Is there a price for your father’s eye in my grave? – he suddenly grabbed him by the collar. – Oh, let me strike your mother, ah, let me do something terrible. If you are half-dead, I will truly kill you, – he said, – the dead will just lie there. The living will take the betağashi and give it to you. Because of the dead, the living Abilai is about to die of hunger, – he said and jumped on him, and as he was about to pull out his sword, he realized: – I will cut off his head, – and when he saw it was serious, he lay back and laughed, the warrior beneath him said: – I am not dead, I am alive. The Khan ordered to test you. – Indeed, that’s what you should say. I thought, “If he is half-dead, let me truly kill him,” – he said. Then everyone gathered, brought the betağashi, and while they were drinking it hot, the Khan sitting beside them asked: – Was there any fear? – he asked. – Your Majesty, why wouldn’t I be afraid? When I was sixteen, my father sent me to serve a certain Khan: “Train my son to be a warrior!” he said. So I went and tended the Khan’s horses. When spring blossomed, the thunder rumbled, and when the rain came, there was a white blizzard, and the horses took shelter, I took shelter with them. After three days and three nights, the sun shone brightly, and the horses grazed. I also dismounted and lay down. As I was dozing off, my whole body became icy, and I was shivering, so I opened my eyes and saw a black striped snake crawling right over me, getting closer to my mouth, I lay still until my mouth was full. Its head came to my mouth, while its tail remained behind. After a while, I swallowed its head. If I wasn’t afraid, would I eat the snake? – he said, – it was my fear that made me alive, – he said. – Well done, your warrior was very afraid, – they said.
