Абылай мен Андығожа батыр

Abilai sent an envoy to the Khan of the Kalmyks, saying: – Let’s come to peace, let’s not always crave blood, let’s not demand from the people and disturb the tranquility of the land! Come to visit us, let’s work for the welfare of the country in the future, – and thus the envoy was sent. After the envoy finished speaking, the Khan was inclined to agree, saying, “Guests, stay for a while,” and did not reveal his intentions. Abilai would often consult with the batyr Andygoja. He called for Andygoja to discuss matters. When Andygoja arrived, he advised Abilai: – Don’t go, – he said, – we are a people related to the Kalmyks, they are calling us out of necessity, I do not agree with your going, – he said. Abilai summoned the waiting envoys and replied: – I will not go. Then the envoys said: – Oh my, the Khan was not like this on the first day; there must be someone who has led him astray! Who could that person be? – they seemed eager to find out. They requested, “Show us Andygoja batyr.” Abilai agreed and arranged for them to meet Andygoja. Andygoja was a stern-looking man with a cold demeanor. When he spoke, he would fill his cheeks and speak. Before he spoke, he would shift in his seat and fidget. Observing such signs, the Kalmyk envoy said to Abilai: – O Khan, you will not go, you will not go, for your weight is very strong, – he said. Then Abilai asked: – Yes, my envoy, what do you know to say this? – he replied. The envoy said: – Khan, you are the one who holds the throne, the one of wisdom, the one who leads the people. However, if no one is interested in you before your batyr, no one will be interested behind you either. A child born will not be exceptional, and he is light in the rear. He has a look as if the enemy is fleeing before him, as if the dispute is fleeing from his mouth, – he said. Then Abilai said: – Hold this! An envoy should not be a woman; this is a woman, – he said. Then the envoy said, “Farewell,” and fled away.
