Karakerey Kabanbay Batyr
While traveling away from the land of Qabanbay, the Kyrgyz warrior Amanali, who had long been harboring a grudge and waiting for an opportunity, attacked Qabanbay's people and took them captive. He turned their daughters into wives, their wives into widows, and their children into orphans, trampling on the honor of the nation and staining its dignity, igniting an unforgivable fire of revenge in the hearts of brave men. From the moment he mounted his horse, Qabanbay, the defender of his people who had never let the vengeance of his nation go unpunished, felt deeply insulted by this disgrace. The old warrior, enraged, sent word to his people and prepared to march against the enemy. Upon hearing Qabanbay's message, the famous Kazakh warriors began to gather from all directions under Qabanbay's banner. After the enemies had ravaged his homeland, The old Qabanbay was filled with sorrow. The brave Boranbay had come, Still unable to gather his thoughts, Unable to take revenge on his enemy. Once all the warriors had gathered, The old Bogeimbai arrived. From Kokjarly, the fierce Kökjal Barak, and the son of Shakshak, the brave Janibek also came, along with the wise Bukhar zhira. Hearing of the great campaign of the warriors seeking revenge for their homeland, Bukhar zhira, at eighty-eight years of age, could not remain idle and set out. In the mountains, the Mergen father hunts argali and ibex, It is a free bounty for the young men to set out. Once all the warriors had gathered, The brave Berdikozha from Shanyshkili arrived. Qabanbay's brave brother, the banner bearer Dauletbay, and the brave Zhantai from the Nayman also came. All the leaders of the Kazakh people, the commanders and orators, gathered together. On the other side of the Irtysh, the sound of Kenen's rifle echoed, Kenen's rifle was like a thunderclap. Once all the warriors had gathered, The Khan Abilay set out for the people. Qabanbay mounted his trusted steed, the battle-tested Kubas, and took the brave Shagalak as his companion. Qabanbay valued Kubas as if he were worth ten thousand men, When he saddled his horse, he did not turn the saddle over, He took Shagalak as a companion. The Kazakh warriors led by Qabanbay, carrying their banners and riding their steeds, marched forward to crush the spirit of their enemies and seek revenge. He took with him a host of brave men, A gathering of the finest warriors and wise men. To take revenge on the Kyrgyz, They headed straight for the Alatau. The warriors marched day and night like tigers, reaching the Alatau, but unable to encounter their enemies, they lay in the enemy's land for months. Horses grew weary, coats wore out, and they suffered from a lack of food and water, causing the men to become as despondent as lions in captivity. The patience of the leading warriors like Bogeimbai and Barak wore thin: “We cannot lie in the steppe, we cannot take down the enemy, give us permission to return!” they said to Qabanbay. Qabanbay admonished them and did not grant permission to return without defeating the enemy. Saying this, Qabanbay smiled, “Come, let us not turn back, be patient, my brother!” he said. That day, there was no wind, no clouds in the bright afternoon, Qabanbay's white banner fluttered. Then Qabanbay shouted, Mounting Kubas, he said “Bismillah.” “It will be a great battle in the bright afternoon,” His white banner fluttered seven times. The young men hurriedly prepared, They said, “The secret of our banner is known.” “There will be a great battle in the bright afternoon,” “Boys, prepare your horses and get ready.” Like eagles longing for their prey, the warriors prepared for the bloody battlefield. They sent a scout to watch for the enemy and eagerly awaited news. At that moment, a tribe appeared, moving. Seeing the enemy, the excited warriors hastily mounted their horses, prepared for battle, and emerged from the front of the caravan. This caravan belonged to Amanali, the enemy who had attacked Qabanbay's people yesterday and was now being watched. Amanali, having quarreled with his brother, encountered the enemy he had been watching by chance while moving away. Amanali was a fierce warrior who would not turn back from a multitude of enemies, a brave warrior who had broken through fortresses. He charged alone against the numerous enemies blocking his path. The brave Qabanbay took up his banner, The warriors rejoiced, saying the enemy had come. Seeing the enemy they had surrounded, A warrior emerged from the caravan. Riding a blue steed, He appeared as if he were a thousand men. Upon seeing the might of the emerging warrior, No one dared to step forward alone. Amanali, charging alone against a thousand, cut through Qabanbay's forces, scattering the Kazakh warriors. At first, no one dared to step forward to challenge such a formidable warrior as Amanali. They did not let the front line break, The warriors grew furious. Unable to hold back, the brave Zhantai charged, And struck him with his spear. Bogeimbai, who had stepped forward for a duel, was also not spared from the spear's thrust. When Kökjal Barak arrived, he was quickly dispatched without a second thought. Unable to contain his anger, the eighty-eight-year-old Bukhar charged: “Old man, you have been driven to hardship,” And he too was quickly dispatched. The brave Berdikozha, who had just arrived, met the same fate as the others. Amanali did not relent, defeating the renowned Kazakh warriors one after another in single combat. He treated the warriors as if they were nothing more than straw. Unable to withstand Amanali's arrogance, filled with vengeance, Qabanbay's brother Dauletbay stepped forward. In the duel, Dauletbay could not withstand Amanali either. The stronger Amanali lifted Dauletbay onto his spear and raised him high. This disgrace weighed heavily on the Kazakh warriors, crushing their spirits and leaving them despondent. The old eagle Qabanbay, who had been watching the battlefield, could no longer bear it. Seeing his brother at the end of the enemy's spear, the old warrior, like a hawk, rushed forward. Qabekeen led the rear guard, The Kyrgyz's prowess was evident. The brave Qabanbay charged down from the mountain, Throwing the white banner to Shagalak. He cast aside Dauletbay from the spear, And saw his enemy as Qabanbay. “I prayed to God for you,” he said, And reached Qabanbay. Qabanbay, having captured the arrogant Amanali with his spear, spun him around nine times and threw him to the ground. At that moment, a girl emerged from the caravan, weeping. She was Amanali's only daughter. Her cries echoed through the heavens and shook the earth, mourning her father's death, causing sorrow to pierce the hearts of men. The girl did not weep in vain. She lamented her father's death, burning with grief, lamenting how he had quarreled with his own people, disobeyed their words, and fallen into the hands of the enemy he had been watching. She blamed her father's stubbornness and bad temper for his demise. She came to mourn her father, wishing to take revenge on the Kazakh warriors, especially Qabanbay, who had fought against him. She pleaded for mercy from the Kazakh warriors, especially from Qabanbay: – If you grant me mercy, grant it yourself, Give me the words you spoke! Give me your dark head, Give me your dark eyebrows! You will plunder the land, And take it as your spoils. You will sacrifice a sheep for me, And take me away without joy. I will not be a joyless wife, You will touch my place, – she pleaded, asking for her father's remains and her own freedom. Mourning the loss of her father, the absence of her mother, and her loneliness without a brother or sister, she cried out: – The food you eat is sweet, The camel you have is strong, Do not make me weep, Kazakh, do not make me weep, You must have a son and a daughter! – she lamented. Then Qabanbay said: – Oh, my friends, my friends, Look here, Do not rob this girl, What spoils can be gained by robbing her? The blood tears flowing from her eyes, – he said, freeing the girl and taking the camel she brought. The camel was a unique creature beyond any animal. It had a forty-ell golden bridle, as if thirty riders were mounted on its back, and it seemed as if a whole nation was moving beneath its feet. The marvel of the camel amazed everyone, No young or old had ever seen such a creature. Dauletbay, Qabanbay's brother, Came to ask his elder brother. Qabanbay, fond of his brother, said: – Do not ask for this camel, if you say you are me, Let me carry my burden until I die. Dauletbay became angry at his brother's words: – If you do not give me this camel, I will not see you, I will not follow you while you are alive, and if you die, I will not join your bones, – he said, speaking harshly and angrily. Qabanbay, angered by his brother's behavior, refused to give him the camel. Dauletbay took his men and, quarreling with his brother, moved away. Several years passed. One day, Qabanbay fell seriously ill and sent word to his people. Upon hearing the sad news of the protector of the nation, the people sought blessings from their hero, and the wise elder Bukhar zhira came upon hearing such news. Realizing that her husband was about to die, Bukhar lamented to the people that the great mountain would fall, the summer pastures and winter camps would burn, and the protector of the people, Qabanbay, would leave this world. – The armor called Akberen Has a hem but no sleeves. When brothers quarrel, There is no grudge. If I truly know a person, There is no one who can be human. Go to Shagalak and Shynqozha, And to Dauletbay, Go and send word. Let them see their elder brother, Let them bury him with their own hands, What will happen on the Day of Judgment, Let them quarrel then. Upon hearing this, Qabanbay said: – Do not go to Dauletbay, he swore he would not see me while I am alive, he will not come. – He spoke of the bride he had chosen for his brother, whose character, wisdom, and humanity greatly pleased Qabanbay. He sent greetings to that bride. – The bride will not exchange words with you while alive, Dauletbay will leave without news of you, and will die with unfulfilled desires, – said Bukhar zhira, sending Shagalak to ride Kubas and hurry to Dauletbay. He went to Dauletbay and delivered Bukhar's message. The cold news was sensed by Dauletbay's wife before him, and she rushed out, weeping, lamenting for her brother-in-law, and hastily prepared to ride, eager to see Qabanbay alive and speak with him. The wolf does not leap from the dense forest, But jumps over it, The fox does not wander from the thicket, But roams at night, By morning, it will arrive in the village. Upon arriving in the village, she asked the shepherd, “Is my elder brother alive?” The shepherd replied: – Qabanbay is in a critical condition, his soul may or may not be departing, he does not drink when offered water, and the sorrowful people are gathered there. He takes a deep breath, Gazing at the light at the door, He seems to be waiting for you, That is what I think. – Upon hearing the shepherd's words, Dauletbay's heart softened, and he cried out, “Elder brother!” and galloped forward. The sound of Kubas's hooves was felt by Qabanbay, who was on the brink of death, and he sent someone outside. When he heard “Your brother has come,” Qabanbay regained his voice, his face brightened, and he gathered his strength to lift his head. Seeing his elder brother in such a state, Dauletbay was filled with grief and wept. Reflecting on the days of regret, he was struck by two heavy sorrows. They embraced each other, filled with longing after a long separation, sharing the sorrow of their last meeting and the grief of impending death: Qabanbay said: “You are my brother, My dear, my brother, my day. For the sake of the white-headed elder of the Kyrgyz, For the old grudge of my people. Let me tell you, my only companion, take your camel that is left without an owner!” – he advised his brother Dauletbay, expressing the treachery of the world. He advised his beloved brother and daughter-in-law to be a source of unity and prosperity for the remaining people. The warrior, weakened, rested his head on the pillow. As he lay in such a heavy state, another dark night descended upon the land. Qabanbay's close companion, the blood-brother Shagalak, could not bear to inform Qabanbay of the impending danger facing the nation. Sensing the unease among the warriors and elders, Qabanbay called Shagalak to him. Shagalak came to him, Kneeled at his side. When he wept, it became a lake, And tears flowed from his eyes. – Oh, dear Qabekey, While you are alive, Is it true that there is disgrace? The enemy is threatening the village, Leading a thousand men, A great disaster is coming. While you are alive, To avoid staining your heart, They are preparing to raid your land, Planning to attack the Kazakhs, And bringing cold news, – upon hearing this news, Qabanbay raised his head. “May my body hold on until noon!” – he prayed, calling for his trusted steed Kubas, and as he stood up, the warrior's white banner fluttered high. Like the sun at twenty-five, Qabanbay mounted Kubas and charged against the dense enemy. Amanali's young brother, who had come seeking revenge for his elder brother's blood, approached Qabanbay for a duel. Fueled by his strength and anger, the old warrior struck down his enemy's banner, defeating him, and with renewed vigor, he chased the fleeing enemy like a field of peas being pelted by hail. Qabanbay, armed and armored, died on horseback while defending his people.
