In the Shanyshky tribe of the Great Zhuz, there was a hero named Berdikozha. He came to propose to the daughter of Maldybay bi, the son of Tauasary (Tauasary is the son of Otep, the brother of Otegul), with the intention of marrying her to his only son. Maldybay welcomed Berdikozha with his friends and showed him hospitality. Early in the morning, he went to consult with Otegen. Maldybay informed Otegen that Berdikozha had come to propose and asked for his advice. Otegen said to Maldybay: – If you listen to my advice, do not give your daughter to Berdikozha's son. When Maldybay asked for the reason, Otegen replied: – Berdikozha is a solitary towering tree; if it falls, there will be no one to take its place and grow in its stead. After Berdikozha dies, your daughter will wander, saying, "I was Maldybay's daughter, Berdikozha's daughter-in-law," wearing one felt boot on one foot and one leather boot on the other, begging for alms. Berdikozha, waking from his sleep, inquired about Maldybay. The villagers told him, "The bi has gone to consult with the wise elder, he will be back soon." Then Berdikozha said: – Ah, Otegen the elder will not become my father-in-law, – and without waiting for Maldybay, he set off. On the way, he proposed to a girl suitable for him and married her to his son. It was the time when the hero Otegen had passed away, and Maldybay was growing old. One day, a woman wearing one felt boot and one leather boot came to Maldybay's house asking for alms. When asked about her, it turned out that the woman was the daughter of Janis Karamen, and she was the daughter-in-law of the late hero Berdikozha. Then Maldybay bi said: – Oh, how blessed you are, my dear elder! What a saint you were, what a holy person you were, – he said, shedding tears. And to the woman who came asking for alms, he gave thirty sheep, a mare with a foal, and a camel.
