Olzhabay and Jasibay
When our Kazakh people migrated from the Syr Darya region, they spent the winter in Ulytau and Kishtau, settling in Surqarasor. They found a place there. In Bayanaul, the Bäsentin tribe, under the rallying cry "Barlybay," came and, during the year of "Ak taban shubirindi, Alqakol sulama," managed to survive without killing even a single mouse. Hearing this, the hero Olzhabai, taking four or five households from the other Suindik – Ulytau and Kishtau, came to Bayanaul. Do they eat livestock by asking people? They chase after sheep, foals, and calves to eat. All of Bäsentin gathered together, hiding from one another, and they gathered at the foot of Bayanaul. They slaughtered a mare at one rich man's place and held a gathering: – These four or five households have not given us peace all winter. Next year, they will do the same again. Where is the saying of the ancients: "Many frighten, deep sinks"? Let’s extinguish their sight and make them disappear! – they were saying when Olzhabai the hero entered: – You will flee! We have no camels with two humps, no milking mares, so we will stay in the mountains. Will we break stones or will we break mountains? We have our unshared inheritance. If the migration is the migration of the people, then the hospitality of the host people is there. If we have an inheritance, let’s divide it, and if we have hospitality, let it be given! – when he said this, a long-necked, narrow-mouthed man sitting near the right threshold of the house said: – "Let’s extinguish our sight and make them disappear!" – while we were saying this, what does he say? At that moment, Olzhabai jumped up, drew his sword from its sheath, and rushed at him, but he fled in a panic, escaping capture. Olzhabai said: – I will not stain my hands on you, nor will I wet my sword with blood! Tomorrow, I will take away all your horses without leaving a single one behind, and then you will test your strength and courage! – and he left. Bäsentin... in the middle of the night, they were restless, disturbed, frightened, fleeing the streets, swept away by the Irtysh River, the mortals drowned in the water, while the non-mortals crossed over to the other side of the Irtysh. In those days, from the Bäsentin tribe, on the day when the hero Jasibai was not turning back, he was a marksman and a diviner: – It was with the tip of a white spear and the strength of a white arm that I freed the land from the Kalmyks. I will not flee, nor will I abandon it without fighting, without being bathed in blood! – he said, remaining in a single house. He had one younger brother who was a poor, useless fellow. If his elder brother had livestock, he would tend to it; if there was firewood, he would gather it, and he remained with only that brother. In the thick of Bayanaul Mountain, there is a lake. To the east of that lake, there is a stone called "Tü tiken." It is said to be the place where Olzhabai and Jasibai raised their banners to say, "We will fight." They had not met face to face before this. After they met, they became "intoxicated without drinking, full without eating," and instead of fighting, they embraced each other, becoming friends. – Come, let us rest here in Bayanaul, Like the deer and the elk that roam freely, Let us celebrate the holiday! This mountain: "It has become deserted, it has become ownerless," The Kalmyks are coming. Let us be an obstacle, Let us wait for them! I will lie at the mouth of one pass, You lie at the mouth of another! – thus, Jasibai lay at the pass that crosses Shoyindykol, and Olzhabai lay at the pass that crosses the lake called Toraygir. In those times, the Kalmyk troops would fortify themselves in the mountains, seeking refuge. Jasibai was watching the divination. The Kalmyk troops had gathered at Kyzyltau, waiting for them. He climbed up to a stone to watch. The Kalmyk lookout was also sitting on a stone. He saw this one, and that one saw him. He returned home and did the divination. The divination revealed that the Kalmyk lookout had reported: – At the mouth of the pass, I saw a black figure. I could not tell if it was a person or a bird. Tomorrow, I will go out on watch again. If it is a person, he will stay; if it is a bird, it will not remain in one place and will have flown away, – he said. His words reached the divination. Jasibai crushed a dry bone, turned it to ash, wrapped it in a white cloth, tied it to the end of a foal's tail, and climbed up to the stone where the lookout was. When he got there, the Kalmyk lookout was sitting. The day was stormy, with a howling wind. He threw the foal's tail into the sky, scattering the ash. The Kalmyk lookout rejoiced, ran to his comrades, and reported: It was a bird yesterday; it flew into the sky and scattered! That’s how I realized it was a bird! – he said. The Kalmyks also had a diviner. The diviner lit the bones, looked, and said: It is not a bird; it is a person. He is both a diviner and a marksman. Our lookout thought it was a "bird," so he threw the foal's tail into the air, scattering the ash. Quickly, saddle your horses! Turn the front of the saddle towards the horse's rear! The divination does not concern the horse's head; it concerns the front of the saddle. Let them think, "He has fled." They traveled all night, and in the dark, they took the mouth of the pass and prepared to stay there! – he said. The Kalmyks continued to prepare their equipment. As soon as Jasibai returned home and did the divination, the front of the saddle was turned further. "Perhaps he has fled," they thought, and they continued to rest carelessly. They even placed bread on the divination. Meanwhile, the Kalmyks traveled all night and, in the dark, thirty marksmen with iron-tipped rifles stood ready. "Now, let’s see you! Even if you have a thousand souls, we will see you!" they said. Jasibai had nothing in mind, completely unaware, as he climbed up to the lookout stone, when they aimed directly at him and shot him down. The poor younger brother, in panic, cried out: "Olzhabai, where are you?" The Kalmyks, whether they thought of Olzhabai or Molzhabai, came over the pass and, as they gathered at the lake, with their yellow flag drooping, they shouted: "Olzhabai! Olzhabai!" and they all fled. Olzhabai came out in front of them and turned back: "What’s the point of not herding them like sheep? – he said, and he rounded them up at the stone called "Kalmakqyrgan." That is why that stone is called "Kalmakqyrgan." Then Olzhabai's companion, the hero Törtuyl Baymurat, said: – There is no Kalmyk left to fight with you. If there are any survivors, will you not give me a ransom? – he said, suddenly grabbing the reins and holding them. Then Olzhabai replied: – The worth of even one of Jasibai's fingers is not yet fulfilled, – he said. "After that, they say the Kalmyks never aimed for Saryarka again." "They say that the tools the Kalmyks used for food were left scattered at the lake, which is why it is called 'Shoyindykol.'" "They say that Jasibai was placed on the path where people walk over the pass, and that pass is called 'Jasibai Pass' for that reason." When Jasibai's body was buried, it was said that the ears of the horses that passed over the grave were less than twenty days old. The elders would say: "Here is Jasibai's grave." Even if others are lost, can a grave be lost? In summer, people see it in the black earth. The Kazakh saint says, "A single word of his does not go to waste: 'The diviner is taken by the enemy, the accountant is swallowed by the beast!'" The reason for Jasibai's death was his trust in his divination. * * * The poet Bukhar zhira, known as "Kömekey Auliye," says: If you are a Muslim (pursiman), go away, Cross the Syr Darya! Reach Jideli Baysyn, Where no one has died without reaching a hundred, Where the sheep have doubled their lambs, So go that way! – he said. – Come, young man, do not place rams among the sheep! Let’s treat the cows like bulls, the camels like bulls, and the horses like stallions! Let’s keep the livestock for three years and do this! Those who migrated before us did the same. They grew and flourished there, and it became known as "Auan el." The first of the Auans is Asan Qaygy. From there – Soraton, Kaztugan, Oraak-Mamai, Telagus, Tama, Shora batyr, and from the Small Horde – Az Edige. "How much is this Abilay?" they would ask, praising him, but "Barefoot, crossing the river, where will my soul go?" said the barefoot Sart. One day he gives his backside to the Russians, another day he gives it to the Shurshits. Did he not give his backside to the Shurshits? He gave his firstborn, Adil, to the Shurshit tsar: "to the white house." Did he not give his backside to the Russians? He gave the fertile land of the Small Horde to Troitsk for trade. He gave the fertile land of the Middle Horde to Kyzylzhar for trade. Come, let’s leave this place. Let’s reach the fertile land of Jideli Baysyn! – he said. The people united and said "au." There is a fate that does not let a person go where he thinks. Unexpectedly, it took him from the shore, swept him away, and laid him down in the west of Ereymentau, laying him on his back. What did he long for when he longed for something? While he was destroying, annihilating, and wrecking, his work was that of a spearman. Instead of piercing with a spear, he would pierce with his form, and he would pierce with his clothes, bringing them down. The soul he pierced in that way would not be fit for riding a horse. Then he regretted – regretted not killing: – If I were to kill a person, my death would be from a person. Like a sheep's dung, lead came to me without a command, lying on the bed like a coward, I died from "the fall"! – he was said to have chewed and pulled out his fingers. Otherwise, I am not one who was with him in sickness, at death, or at his head. That is why his descendants have flourished and multiplied. The descendants of the Kazakh woman are one tribe, the descendants of the Kalmyk woman are one tribe. There is a descendant of a Karakalpak woman, whom people call "Kalpak." Like locusts that have fallen into the crops, there is something that is bustling about. If you wander from the head of the river Shiderti to its end, it will be the descendants of Olzhabai. They made a shelf to lay his body, saying, "We will take the body to Aziret," like a shelf for laying out curds and cheese. In the end, they could not take him to Aziret and laid him in the pastures where they used to graze near Kokshetau. The place of his death is called "Olzhabai Seresi." That place is now called "Olzhabai City." The place where he was buried is called "Olzhabai Tamy," and there is a tomb made of stones brought by horse from Maylykara. Olzhabai the hero said before he died: – When my descendants hear the word "enemy," their tails will quiver; when they hear the word "argument," their throats will tremble, – he said. Let no word from what I heard be lost; did they not say, "The ear that hears has no fault"?
