The critique of life
It was the time when Almerik Batyr had completely stopped going on campaigns and had turned his full attention to the peaceful activities of life within the country. Day and night, he thought about the welfare of the people. "We were a small nation, let us not perish," he would say, guiding them, and he did not venture far from his village. The elderly, who had lost their strength and compassion, also gathered around Almerik, seeking his company more often. They frequently asked the wise sage about the intricacies of life and shared their thoughts without pause.
Since it was also a time when Sirymbet Batyr, the proud companion he relied on and consulted, was shyly staying at home, he would call upon the younger Almerik and engage in conversations every day. Sirymbet Batyr's son, Hankeledy Batyr, was also in a phase of rising pride and strength. The enemies of the nation were many. They approached from all sides like hungry wolves. They all wanted to conquer and turn the people into slaves.
The elders discussed this matter and guided the young warriors. Therefore, both the older and younger heroes did not dismount from their horses, guarding their land and people. They scouted the outskirts of the country, watching the movements of the enemy from afar. They remained vigilant themselves.
As summer passed, it was the time when the people moved from the summer pastures to the valleys. The old blue ice of the Alatau Mountains slid down from the cliffs and rolled down into the valleys. The grass in the fresh ravines began to come alive. The broad banks of the Taldybulak stream were desolate and bleak, devoid of people. Seeing this scene, Sirymbet Batyr, whose heart was heavy and whose spirit was restless, said:
– In a land without people, there is neither trial nor beauty! – looking at the empty plain. He turned to the sage beside him and sighed heavily. Then, wanting to lift the warrior's gloomy spirit, Almerik cleared his throat and spoke words of spirited encouragement.
– Do not be disheartened, warrior! Our nation and our stature are growing. Isn’t there a saying among the people: "When the people move, the land becomes desolate; when the livestock leave, the spirit wanes. When the birds leave, the lake becomes desolate; when the girls leave, the nation becomes desolate. When the leaves fall, the tree becomes desolate; when the companions leave, the elder becomes desolate. The beast becomes desolate without pasture; the king becomes desolate without kindness. The storm that brings the feast howls, but the dust-swept steppe does not decay." May this land and this nation not perish, indeed! – the old warrior gazed around with longing.
– Looking at the appearance of this steppe, you believe in the future of the nation!
Upon hearing this statement, Sirymbet Batyr said:
– Oh, world, may the nation reach that! – and he sighed again, lamenting in sorrow.
