Baidaly Bi
Baidaly lived a long life, and when he was old and his eyesight had diminished, there was a man named Merke who was giving rulings in Karkaraly. Having heard that he was an experienced and renowned elder, Baidaly sent a messenger to greet him. In his greeting, he said, “I hear that the person mentioned is someone worth knowing. I have fallen ill with four different ailments; is there a remedy for this? Please find out and let me know.” When the messenger arrived, he found Merke sitting among a gathered crowd. After conveying the message, Merke sat back and said, “Oh, my dear Baidekem! It seems that age has no need for excess; this person has also fallen into such a state?” The crowd responded, “What does this mean? It seems Baideke has spoken in riddles; we do not understand. You must have understood and are upset. Isn’t it appropriate for the public to hear!” Then Merke replied:
- What Baideke is saying is not particularly difficult; it reflects his own condition. The words he has spoken are as follows: “I have encountered a mountain without a pass, I have faced a river without a crossing, I have become one who endlessly wanders in search of what is lost, I have fallen into the hands of a merciless enemy.” The first three refer to “encountering a mountain without a pass” – his knees have become weak, and he cannot walk. “Facing a river without a crossing” means his eyes are filled with tears. He has no wife to care for him, and he struggles to find his pipe, finally managing to sit down with great difficulty. “Fallen into the hands of a merciless enemy” means he is under the control of a daughter-in-law.
- I will only speak of a remedy for one of his ailments. Let him see the others in light of his advanced age. If he can manage to get through this, he will be freed from endlessly searching for what is lost, – he said.
