Legend of Karkabat
Once, my brother Karpish was with me. In 1956, we happened to go to Zhosaly. As we got out of the car, I approached three women who were talking and greeted them: – How are you? – I asked. One of the younger women among them replied: – You say "How are you?" to a sick person; this greeting from Karakesek is quite a form! – she teased. – "How are you?", "Are you well?", "Are you safe?" all mean the same thing; they are all about well-being. When one person wants to reconcile another, they say "you need to make peace," "you need to bring together," "you need to unite." Although these are three phrases, they are all about reconciliation. You and I are both Kazakhs with a common ancestry; our kinship will help our people grow and thrive. A bad woman who does not understand the value of a man or the value of a nation speaks lightly and makes inappropriate remarks, – I said. Then the woman tried to say something else, but one of the older women beside her said: – Don’t get flustered now; knowing you’ve fallen, take these people to your home; you don’t seem like someone who would throw them away, regardless of the situation… – she said. – I have fallen; now let’s go home, – I said, and the woman began to lead us to her house. After we settled in, I asked: – My dear, let’s get to know each other’s relatives; what is your lineage? – I inquired. The woman replied: – I am the daughter of the completely black Quan-dyq. One good thing: Born of a black Karakesek maid, Your Qazybeg washed away the dirt, – as Shozhe said, we were not born of a maid, – she said. – My dear, let me tell you the meaning of "maid," listen carefully. Our ancestor Meyram married from afar – from the Lesser Zhuz. When a precious girl was sent from afar, they could not let her go alone, so they sent along her beloved sister-in-law and her brother's daughter named Karkabat. At that time, there were frequent raids between the Kazakhs and the Kalmyks. The people from the far side fled, and those from this side retreated, and they could not return the girl’s sister-in-law and sister to their homeland, so they were left behind. They could not come to take them back, and two or three years passed. Then Meyram's first wife said: – These two came along to keep me company. In the end, they fled from their people and stayed behind. Let’s not be taken as spoils by anyone; I allow you to take both of them, so we can at least see each other! – she said to her husband. Thus, Meyram took both of them. From the sister-in-law, Shubirtpaly was born, and from the sister, Bolatqozha (Karakesek) was born. From the two later wives, two sons were born, and from the first wife, four sons were born. The four sons born from the four wives and the four sons born from the first wife eventually quarreled over inheritance. The sons of the first wife wanted to divide the inheritance by the number of sons, while the sons born from the second wives wanted to divide it according to the ancient tradition of the people, by the number of wives. Even when divided this way, the first wife received a preferential share, but her sons did not accept it. Thus, quarrels arose from both sides, and the four sons born from the second wives drove away the livestock. Bolatqozha was stronger, more powerful, and bolder than the others. He kept hitting the first wife’s children with stones and rocks that he could find. That’s why he became known as "Karakesek." Then the first wife said: – Karkabat is suitable for resolving this; there’s no need to go to the khan or the judges; we need to propose to Karkabat, – she said. – If you propose to me, I will resolve it! – said Karkabat. So, Karkabat called the first wife’s children and said: – I will give you a good stallion and your best horses; do not quarrel over the number of livestock. Secondly, do not break the ancestral tradition that the first wife’s chosen share is to be received by her, – he said. Then he called the children of the second wives and said: – I will ensure that your shares are sufficient in number, without reducing them. Do not be tempted by the quality or beauty of the livestock, – he said. Thus, Karkabat divided the inheritance and brought peace to both sides. The first wife was pleased with Karkabat and later said to her children: – What will you do by disturbing the spirits of the deceased? From now on, when a man stumbles or a horse falters, you can call out "Karkabat," – she said. From then on, Karkabat became the rallying cry for Karakesek...
