Қасым Сұлтанның анасы – Қандан
Үзіліссіз соғыс елді әбден титықтатып, ығыр еткен соң Абылай аз уақыт болса да дамылдау мақсатымен Қалден Серенге елші жұмсайды. Оған басшы болып Ескелді барады. Барған бетінде қалмақтың ханы:
– Сөйле! – дейді.
– Мен сөйлесем, бұрынғының адамдары айтушы еді: қазақ, қалмақ туысқан деп. Оны айғақтайтын ұқсастығымыз да көп. Ал арамызда ала ауыздық, араздық бола қалса:
«Даудың түбін қыз бекітеді,
Судың түбін шым бекітеді.
Жаудың түбін тіл бекітеді», –
деп жататын. Келіссеңіздер, сүйек жаңғыртып, не қыз беріп, не қыз алып, татуласып тынайық, – дейді Ескелді.
Сонда Қалден Серен:
– Тыңдауға сөзі жайлы, жүрек тебірентерліктей дана екен. Қыз берсек, осының өзіне берелік! – депті. Бұл сөзді ести сала Ескелді:
– Салтты санасыз бұзар. Ел ағасынан бұрын інісі жол алмас болар. Абылай еліміздің айбыны да, ағасы да, тақсыр! Жол алдымен сондағы қыздың есімі – Қандан екен дейді. Қасым сұлтан сол кісіден туған деседі айтушылар.

Qasym Sultan's mother is Qandan.
After the continuous war had thoroughly exhausted and worn out the people, Abilai sends an envoy to Qalden Seren for a brief respite. Eskeldi is appointed as the leader of the mission. Upon arrival, the Khan of the Kalmyks says:
- Speak!
- If I speak, the people of old used to say: Kazakhs and Kalmyks are kin. We have many similarities to prove this. However, if there is discord or enmity between us, they would say:
"The resolution of a dispute is determined by a girl,
The depth of a river is determined by the mud,
The defeat of an enemy is determined by the tongue."
If you agree, let us reconcile by renewing our bonds, either by giving or taking a girl, - says Eskeldi.
Then Qalden Seren replies:
- His words are wise and heart-stirring. If we give a girl, let us give her to him! - he says. Upon hearing this, Eskeldi responds:
- A thoughtless person would break the tradition. A younger brother may take the lead before an elder. Abilai is both the pride and the elder of our nation, my lord! It is said that the name of the girl in question is Qandan. It is said that Sultan Qasim was born from her.
