"The Battle of the Pine Curtain"
The Great Horde – unable to withstand the pressure of the forces formed by the Uysyns and the Little Horde – the Zhagalbailis, began to retreat in disarray. When the Oirat reached Tekeli, they united and, using the "ambush" tactic skillfully, moved along the narrow path stretched across the northern slopes of Zholbarys, Baldyrghan, and Kyzqulagan. Realizing that they could not achieve final victory against the cunning enemy, the large force led by Batyr Eskeldi held a brief meeting and left only a few mounted troops visible from a distance to chase the enemy, while they themselves prepared to encircle the enemy through Küyeli, Koksu, Sandykas, and Karagayly.
The well-informed troops reached their intended destination, Kyzylauyz, in less than a day. However, they concealed their main force in the dense forest of Karagayly behind them. The clash at Kyzylauyz did not last long. Sensing that the Kazakhs were few in number, the Kalmyks began to pursue them aggressively. When the fleeing Kazakhs reached Karagayly, they split into two groups, with one taking the eastern side and the other the western side, climbing up the steep slope. The Kalmyks, not to be outdone, also split into two and followed closely. At that moment, Eskeldi and Balpyk's large force, which had been waiting for this opportunity, emerged from within Karagayly and crushed the divided enemy without allowing them to regroup.
The "Ambush" tactic executed under Eskeldi's direct command astonished the Kalmyk khan, who, upon being captured, asked:
– What do you call this dense forest on the slope that is turning over like a cauldron?
When the Kazakhs replied "Karagayly," he shook his head and said:
– No, this is the dark pine that has blinded our eyes and darkened our hearts; we have been deceived, – and he bit his tongue in regret. From that day on, the local people in the summer pastures began to refer to that place as "Shymyldy Karagay."
