Zhanibek Bi
While Abilai was fighting against the Dzungar invaders, eighteen-year-old Zhanibek was chasing after him. When he arrived, he found the Kazakhs scattered, and the invaders were closing in on Abilai, who was on his horse. Zhanibek dismounted and presented his blue stallion to the khan.
- My dear, what will you do? - asks Abilai.
- If you are captured, the country will be without its leader; if I am captured, a Kazakh woman will give birth to a son, - replies the young man.
Abilai mounts a fresh horse and escapes from the pursuers. Zhanibek also manages to break free from the encirclement by riding a horse taken from a Kalmyk warrior.
- Boy, what you have given me is worth more than what you have said; this time, the spoils belong to you. Come on, take whatever you want from me, - says the khan after finding Zhanibek post-battle.
Abilai asks twice without a response, and on the third time, Zhanibek says:
- Your Majesty, I have enough wealth for myself; if you could grant me a place on your right thigh, that would be enough.
- Give the warrior a place; I had promised that whatever he asked for, I would grant him, - says Abilai to the elder sitting on his right. The elder, not moving from his place at the first request, looks at Zhanibek with a sidelong glance at the second request:
- Your father was like an old man who could not properly drink the food placed before him. What is there for you next to the khan? Even if you are a horse attendant, isn't that enough? - he says.
- Did you become a protector of the bad or a savior of the good? What right do you have to sit next to the khan, just because you know a couple of old sayings? If the khan asks twice, his honor diminishes; if a commoner asks twice, his dignity is lost. From a bunch of dry wood, a single arrow will emerge. If my father is bad, so be it; stand aside, - he says, grabbing the elder by the hand and standing him up, then takes a place on the right side of the khan. From that moment on, the young man becomes a renowned warrior, leading troops against the invaders alongside the elders, and is known as "Er Zhanibek."
