Zhidebay Batyr (Version II)
Zhidebay was a saint, a poet, and an astrologer. Before a warrior set out on a campaign, he would gather his troops and, looking at the untouched shoulder blade of a sheep (sometimes also by burning it and looking at the ashes), would predict the outcome of the campaign in advance. He was a seer, a visionary, and a commander. Khan Abilay had entrusted Zhidebay the task of guarding the Balkhash-Akmola region, preventing the enemy from entering. Zhidebay died after reaching the age of one hundred. In one of his poems, he wrote:
I became Zhidebay the warrior –
By the blessing of Khan Abilay.
My victory over the Zunghar Khanate –
Is thanks to Kabanbay and Bogenbay's strength.
Reaching the age of one hundred –
Is the gratitude of a Muslim.
The loss of my two eyes –
Is the curse of the Zunghars.
One thing that the people particularly mention is Zhidebay's fairness. Once, after a battle, he returned to his homeland to rest his horse and dry his saddle. While visiting a contemporary's house, having a meal, and engaging in conversation, a wolf attacked the livestock grazing near the village. The wolf killed the calf of the house where Zhidebay was staying. Although the host did not express any displeasure over this minor incident, the warrior thought for a moment and said:
– Oh dear, if I hadn’t come to this house, the wolf wouldn’t have eaten the calf! The host became distracted by me, and the wolf devoured his calf. This is injustice, – he said, and sent a young assistant back to his village to bring a calf. Upon hearing this, the people were greatly astonished and spoke of Zhidebay's fairness, deciding to bring their disputes to him from then on. The warrior would give judgments, calling the people to unity and honesty, teaching them to be cautious of both internal and external enemies.
