Golden Saka (Golden Knucklebone)
Once upon a time, there was a rich man who longed for a child. He traveled far and wide, seeking help from saints, and eventually acquired a son. One day, while watering his horses at a lake, he noticed a bright red liver floating in the water. The horses he had brought were frightened by the liver and refused to go near the water. Despite the rich man trying to herd them and catch them, he couldn't get them to drink. At that moment, the rich man pulled the floating liver out of the water with a lasso. The liver sank, and after a while, it emerged from the water as an old witch and seized the rich man. The rich man was terrified and exclaimed, "I will give you gold as heavy as a horse's head, just let me go!" The witch did not relent. "I will give you all my horses, just let me go!" he pleaded. The witch remained unyielding. In desperation, the rich man asked, "What can I give you then?" The witch replied, "Give me your only son, and I will let you go." The rich man agreed to give up his only child, and the witch released him. She then asked, "Where will you give me your child?" The rich man replied, "Tomorrow I will move, and I will leave my son's golden game piece for everyone to see; you will sit by that game piece." Thus, the rich man promised the witch and drove his horses away. The next day, he moved and forgot to take his son's golden game piece, leaving it behind. The village was relocating, and the boy, lacking his game piece, cried for it. The father said, "It must have been left behind while we were moving. Go and get it." The boy wanted to go but asked his father, "Father, what horse should I ride?" The rich man replied, "Ask the herdsman." The herdsman told the boy, "Go to the horses with your lasso swinging and your bridle jingling. Ride whichever horse looks at you." The boy approached the horses, swinging his lasso and jingling his bridle, when a scabby horse came toward him. He caught the scabby horse and bridled it. As he bridled it, the scab disappeared. When he placed a saddle on it, it became a colt. When he put a saddle on it, it became a stallion. When he pulled the reins, it became a thoroughbred. The boy joyfully jumped on it, and in the blink of an eye, he reached the village. When he arrived, he found his golden game piece lying under a pile of dung by the hearth. An old woman was sitting next to it. The boy said to her, "Mother, please hand me my game piece!" The old woman replied, "My dear, I am too old to stand; if I stand, I cannot sit, and if I sit, I cannot stand." The boy said, "I am very young; if I get down, I cannot reach it, and if I stay on, I cannot get down." At that moment, the boy's horse lay down next to the game piece. The boy, without pulling his foot from the stirrup, grabbed the game piece. The horse took off running. The witch stood up and chased after him. As the boy fled, the witch could not catch him. In frustration, she pulled out a tooth and threw it, hitting one of the horse's legs and causing it to stumble. The horse ran on three legs, but the witch threw another tooth, causing another leg to be injured. The horse, now running on two legs, came across a tree and wanted to rest. As it approached the tree, the boy jumped off and climbed to the top. The witch pulled out another tooth and began digging at the base of the tree, digging until evening. At one point, a red fox came and said to the witch, "Mother, you look tired; let me dig while you rest." The witch handed her the tooth and fell asleep. The fox threw the tooth into the water, filled in the hole, and ran away. When the witch woke up, both the tooth and the fox were gone. She pulled out another tooth and continued to dig at the base of the tree. Soon after, another fox came and said, "Mother, let me borrow your digging tool; you must be tired, let me dig." The witch replied, "You will just take my tool and run away." The fox said, "I am the red fox from the hill, and I am the white fox from the valley. Long ago, when this boy's father was hunting, he almost caught me. Therefore, I have a grudge against this boy." Believing the fox, the witch handed over her digging tool and fell asleep again. The fox threw the tool into the water, filled in the hole, and ran away. When the witch woke up, both the tool and the fox were gone. "Oh no, I have been deceived," she thought, and pulled out another tooth to continue digging. When she opened her mouth, she found that only one tooth remained. As she continued to dig, she was getting closer to collapsing the tree. At that moment, a flock of crows flew overhead. The boy called out to them, "Oh, crows, crows, with your wings, fly. Please tell my five watchdogs in the pasture to rescue me from the witch." The crows flew off cawing. Soon after, a flock of ducks flew overhead, and the boy called to them as well, but they flew away without responding. Then a swallow flew back and forth above the tree and landed on the boy's head. The boy, crying, entrusted his message to the swallow. The swallow had previously raised the boy's nestlings without harming them, so the boy was friends with the swallow. The swallow conveyed the message to the boy's watchdogs, saying, "There is a boy standing at the top of a tree; the witch is digging at the base, and it is about to fall." Upon hearing this, the watchdogs rushed to the tree. Just then, the tree fell to the ground. The boy's watchdogs tore the witch apart, and the boy rode each of his five watchdogs in turn, safely returning to his village. The boy was overjoyed to have escaped the witch and celebrated with a grand feast, inviting all his relatives and friends. Days later, the witch's daughter came to the fallen tree. When she arrived, she found her mother dead, her fur scattered. To find out who had killed her, she looked around and saw the footprints of dogs. Following the tracks, she came across a large herd of horses and realized she was close to the village. The tracks led directly to the rich man's corral. At that moment, the five watchdogs, sensing the witch's daughter, rushed at her. However, she was very strong and did not yield to the five watchdogs. In that instant, the boy shot an arrow, hitting her in the eye, and with another shot, he killed her. Thus, he was forever free from the witch.
