According to stories among the people, the governor-general imprisoned Kurmangazy. In prison, the musician meets the Kalmyk hero Saranjap. Saranjap had written something to his clan leaders and had brought it to this place. The two of them conspire and soon find a way to escape from the Astrakhan prison. They take refuge in the house of a man named Yergali Eszhanov, located 50 kilometers from Astrakhan, and stay there for about two months. Yergali is a somewhat educated man who knows Russian and has a discerning outlook. He is a talented dombra player and has long regarded Kurmangazy as his teacher from afar. He treats Kurmangazy, who has come to his home under unfortunate circumstances, like a father. During this time, he teaches him many of the melodies he has composed. Saranjap, who is also with the musician, says that he will return to his homeland after resting a bit. At that moment, Kurmangazy plays a melody and says, "This is a piece I composed for you. Let it be a memory of our time together." That melody becomes known among the people as "Saranjap."
