The Lame Antelope
It is widely known that the legend says Kurmangazy's "Aksak Kiik" (Lame Antelope) was composed during this journey. While in the village of Toremurad, when he went out to hunt antelope, Kurmangazy reportedly asked, "Where should I aim to hit the antelope?" as he was about to shoot the third antelope. One of the hero's companions, as if to say "Do you really think you can hit it?", quickly replied, "Aim for its leg." Then Kurmangazy hit the antelope in its hind leg, and the antelope limped away on three legs. When the young men who were eager to chase shouted, "I'll pursue it," Kurmangazy did not allow them. He took his dombra and played a tune right there. Toremurad, who was completely absorbed in Kurmangazy's music, did not let anyone approach the musician, and only when Kurmangazy finished playing did he go up and ask, "Jiyenzhan, I feel like something else has come up here, have you named it?" Kurmangazy paused for a moment, not looking pleased but rather upset, and replied:
– "Nagasheke, all wounded are wounded, all souls are the same; in the struggle for life, who does not get shot? In our time, is the only wounded soul the antelope? I was going to refrain from shooting, but I shot due to the heated words of your young men. I dedicated this tune to the wounded, like that limping antelope. Its name is 'Aksak Kiik'."
